The Fond du Lac boys hockey team is out to a 2-0 start this season and the play of junior forward Caylen Dyni is a big reason why.

Dyni leads the team with six points on three goals and three assists, tallying three points each in the Cardinals' wins over Milwaukee Marquette University and Waupun. He had a hand in all three goals Fond du Lac scored in its 3-2 win over Waupun last Friday, scoring the game-winner himself early in the third period.

All of this is coming off a sophomore season in which Dyni was a secondary option for the Cardinals, scoring only 14 points all year.

The Reporter caught up with Dyni before practice on Monday to talk about his early success, Fond du Lac's 2-0 start and goals for the rest of the season.

The Reporter: You're off to a hot start this year, already tallying six points. What's been behind that?

Caylen Dyni: Great play throughout the offensive zone. My linesmen Jack (Nejedlo) and Henry (Lange), they just set me up and I've just happened to be in the right place.

TR: Did you feel you'd be ready for an increased offensive role on the team this year?

CD: I knew I had to step up, especially because we lost (leading scorer) Michael Wilson from last year. I had to be more of a leader this year and adjust to my new role.

TR: Coming into the season, what expectations did you have for yourself?

CD: Get a lot of points — that would help the team out. I didn't think I'd start this well.

TR: Jack Nejedlo missed a lot of last season with a knee injury. How big is it for you individually to have him back this year?

CD: It's huge. We can always count on him to make the pass. He's always looking to give the puck to someone else. It's just great to play with him. He really moves the puck well and he can score, too.

TR: The team is out to a 2-0 start. What would you say has been the overall key to that?

CD: We're just playing really well together now. I think we're a complete team this year. No separate groups or anything. We're just finding ways to put the puck in the net this year.

TR: Does the team have any goals it hopes to accomplish this season?

CD: We all want to go to state this year. That would be great. But we're just going to take it one game at a time and try to get the win every week.

TR: How satisfying was it to get the win over rival Waupun last week?

CD: It was a much-needed win. Going into the game, we didn't know what to think of Waupun really and it ended up being a close game, so it was nice to get that win last Friday.

TR: You guys were down 2-0 against the Warriors before scoring three goals in the span of five minutes — all of which you played a part in. Did you take it upon yourself to turn the game around?

CD: I was definitely getting a little frustrated in the second period when we were down 2-0 and I just knew that we needed to get a quick goal to get back in the game and it happened with a second left (in the period). We just took that momentum and brought it into the third period.

TR: You have another big rivalry game coming up on Thursday against the St. Mary's Springs co-op. How important is this game to the team?

CD: This is probably one of our most important games of the year. A win here would be a huge confidence boost so that's what we're looking to get this week.

TR: What's your dream sporting event to attend?

CD: I'd love to go down to Tampa for a Tampa Bay Lightning game.
