Six goals scored, five via the power play

When teams take advantage of power play opportunities, it can have a huge impact on the outcome of a game.

McFarland traveled to Stoughton for a Badger Conference crossover match-up.  Both teams entered the game with 2-0 records.  Stoughton defeated DeForest 3-2 in their season opener on November 29th and on December 2nd posted a 6-1 win over Sauk Prairie.  McFarland opened their season on November 25th with a 5-2 victory over Beaver Dam.  The Spartans followed that up with a 3-2 win over Kenosha on December 3rd.

Stoughton's Zach Kirby was accessed a two minute minor for slashing at 7:32 of the first period.  The Spartans kept the pressure on and were able to convert on power play with a goal by Max Schmidt assisted by Dillon Clark with 11 seconds remaining on the power play.  McFarland's Clark picked up a five minute major for boarding at 9:39 of the first.  Jacob Fitzsimmons of Stoughton received a two minute minor for tripping at 9:39, also.  One more penalty was called in the period thirty seconds later, when McFarland's Nick Knoche was sent to the sin bin for tripping.  However, neither team was able to score the rest of the period and the Spartans led 1-0 going into the first intermission.

The second period belonged to the Vikings.  Thirty-one seconds into the period the Spartans' Matthew Scmidt went to the penalty box for tripping, but the Vikings could not score.  McFarland went on the power play at 2:24 of the second, when the Vikings' Jackson Breton went to the box for slashing.  The Spartans were unable to convert the opportunity.  Breton went to the box once again at 5:03 of the second, but Stoughton killed off the penalty.  Stoughton was able to cut the deficit by one, when Arin BonDurant scored with an assist by Breton at 9:23 of the second period.

The Vikings went on the power play at 10:52 as McFarland's William Kemnitz was called for holding.  The power play increased to a 5 on 3 opportunity, when the Spartans' Tyler Johnson was called for slashing with 5:05 remaining in the second.  Twelve seconds later Stoughton tied the game at two with a power play goal from Jackson Breton with Nathan Varese and Kyle Zeimet being credited with the assists.  Jacob Fitzsimmons gave the Vikings the lead with an unassisted power play goal at 13:41 of the second period.  Stoughton's Robby Volk was called for tripping at 14:45.  Unfortunately for McFarland they were unable to capitalize and the period came to an end with Stoughton leading 3-1.

The third period found Stoughton's Parker Kruckenberg called for cross-checking at 5:03.  The Spartans took advantage with a power play goal by Justin Saladis forty-two seconds later.  Dietrick Schwoerer and William Kemnitz assisted on the goal.  Things got very interesting with 7:12 remaining in the game.  McFarland's Saladis was issued a 5 minute major and 10 minute misconduct for checking from behind.  The Vikings' BonDurant was issued a 2 minute minor for roughing, while his teammate Robby Volk received a 5 minute major for boarding.  McFarland's Matthew Schmidt scored a power play goal with William Kemnitz and Dillon Clark assisting at 10:50 of the third period to tie the game at 3.  Regulation came to an end with the game knotted at 3.

Neither team was able to score in the 8 minute overtime and the game concluded in a 3-3 tie.  Jordan Mazzara finished the game with 21 saves for McFarland, while Matt Murphy had 48 saves for Stoughton.
