West coach Susens, a Wisconsin hockey icon, will retire

Leaves the coaching ranks with 573 victories, most in WI history

WAUSAU — Pete Susens had one thought as he entered his first game as the Wausau West boys hockey coach in 1978 after serving as an assistant the previous year.

Survive.

“That’s pretty much what it was for me,” Susens said. “When I came to Wausau West, I was an assistant for Don Bradford, who was an excellent mentor. But it was different; I wasn’t quite prepared to be a head coach at that time. I learned a lot along the way.”
