Onalaska scores four in second to win sectional 3 championship

Onalaska advances to state semifinals for ninth time

Onalaska Hilltoppers were looking for the third straight trip to Madison, while the Metro Lynx were looking for their first trip to the Alliant Energy Center in March.

Onalaska took the early advantage, when Ellie Bohm was called for hooking at 1:46 of the first period.  The Lynx penalty kill unit proved up for the task and kept the Hilltoppers off the board.  Ellie Bohm gave the Lynx an early lead at 15:13 of the first period.  Hunter Kurbel of the Metro Lynx stopped all 12 shots she saw in the first period.  Jeanalyn Schindler had 8 saves for Onalaska.  The Lynx led 1-0 at the end of one period.

Onalaska tied the game on a goal by Theresa Knutson at 2:11 of the second period with an assist from Mackenzie Steinfadt.  The Hilltoppers took the lead, when Jamie Weilandt found the back of the net at 6:31 with Kyla Bantle and Jacyn Reeves being credited with the assists.  Reeves extended the Hilltoppers lead to two on a short handed goal at 10:03 assisted by Knutson and Weilandt.  Knutson scored at 12:48 of the second to take a 4-1 lead.  Lucy Anderholm assisted on the play.  Chazlyn Anderson of Onalaska was called for tripping and the Metro Lynx went on the power play with 4:04 left in the second period.  The Lynx's Meagan Sheehan was called for a holding penalty with 47 seconds remaining on the power play.  Neither team scored the rest of the second period and Onalaska led 4-1 as the period ended.  Schindler had 9 saves in the period, while Kurbel had 11 saves for the Lynx.

Siera Petet scored at 2:38 of the third with an assist from Bohm to make it 4-2.  Bohm cut the Hilltoppers lead to one with an unassisted goal at 5:51 of the period.  Both teams continued to battle and the Hilltoppers had to stop a furious attack in the last minute of the game.  Onalaska held on to a 4-3 win.  Schindler had six saves in the third period to finish with 23 saves.  Kurbel finished with 30 saves, after stopping 7 saves in the third.

Onalaska will play the St. Croix Valley Fusion in the second semi-final game on Friday at the Alliant Energy Center.  This will be the second meeting between the two teams this season with the Hilltoppers winning in overtime the last time.  Onalaska has earned their ninth trip to Madison.  The Fusion have earned their fourth trip and have won the state title each of their previous trips.
