Central Wisconsin headed back to Madison with 2-0 win

Clank!

The top-seeded Central Wisconsin Storm used their patented shut-down defense to limit the host Northland Pines Eagle to 9 shots on goal, beating the Eagles 2-0 Saturday afternoon to advance to the State Tournament.

The Dome was packed in Eagle River for the Section Two final. Playing on the smaller ice sheet, both teams fought for position without backing down. The Eagles physical play seemed to upset the Storm fans more than it upset the players, who gave back as much as they took. The only penalty in the period was called on the Storm's Marissa Matushak, for checking.

Despite some sustained pressure and good scoring chances, the nets remained empty in the first period. Pines goalie Jenna Paez stopped all 6 shots put on her, while Lisa Fowle stopped 3 shots on the other end.

The Storm broke the seal on the Pines net 3:22 into the second period. Katelynn Schilling put a shot on Paez, who stopped it, but Katelyn Ramthun was there to put home the rebound.

A few minutes later Kelly Knetter and Maggie Plaza got behind the Pines defense and came in on goal, but Knetter's shot clanked off the crossbar.

With just under two minutes left in the second period, Schilling put a shot on Paez from the left side, and Elizabeth Bauer was there for a rebound shot. Paez stopped both attempts, but the puck trickled through a small gap between her pads and fell to the ice behind her. Ramthun was first to see the puck lying in the crease and poked it into the open net for a 2-0 Storm lead.

With a two goal lead heading into the third period, the Storm could just sit back and play defense, which they do so well. They held the Eagles to just three shots on goal again in the third, while only putting 5 shots on Paez. For the game, the Storm outshot Pines 28-9.
