Verona's defense holds up late

The sectional six final featured the Verona Wildcats looking for the sixth trip to the quarterfinals and third straight.  The Regents were looking for their 13th trip and first since 2007.

Alex Jones of Verona faced three shots in the first 27 seconds and then a total of three for the rest of the first period.  Henry Cutting finished the period with 12 saves.  The first period looked like it was going to end without a penalty being called, but at 16:01 Griffin Epping of Madison West was called for slashing.  The Wildcats went on the power play.  However, it was a short lived opportunity as Charlie Parker was penalized for holding at 16:26 to make it 4 on 4 hockey for the rest of the first.

The 4 on 4 to start the second period lasted for the first 1:01 and then Madison West went on a 24 second power play.  Madison West's Edwin Jiang was sent to the sin bin at 2:44 for tripping putting Verona on the power play.  Thirteen seconds later, the Wildcats' Brodie Roehrig coverted the power play goal with Pat Stevens and Charlie Parker assisting.  The rest of the period saw both teams continuing to move the puck, but no scoring or penalties.  Jones stopped for shots for Verona in the second giving him a total of 10.  The Regents' Cutting had 13 saves to move his total to 25.

The Wildcats increased their lead to two, when Liam Schmitt scored at 9:39 of the third period.  Brogan Baker and Phillipe Fromberger assisted on the goal.  Madison West answered back at 10:41 after a flurry of shots resulted in a goal byCole Paskus with Max Lentz and Mick Messner assisting on the goal.  Joe Stevens of Verona was called for hooking with 2:56 remaining.  The Wildcats killed off the penalty and a timeout was called by the Regents with 25.6 seconds remaining.  Verona held on to win and advanced to their third straight state quarterfinals.  Cutting had 15 saves in the third, while Jones had 12 saves.
