Siclovan solid in 28 save performance

Jake Jaworski and Kobe Keller each scored twice and Nathan Siclovan flashed shades of old as the SPASH Panthers handled the DC Everest Evergreens 5-2 at the K.B. Willett Arena Friday evening in Sectional 3 play.

Jaworski got the Panthers prowling with his score from the right dot at the 6:05 mark, with assists to Jared Hucke and Austin Haas.

Three minutes later, Jaworski almost got his second goal while on a breakaway, but DCE goalie Michael Moe stoned the SPASH senior.

Keller made it 2-0 just over a minute later when his shot glanced off a DCE player and made it past the netminder for an unassisted goal.

Moments later while on a penalty kill, a SPASH defender was called for covering the puck in the crease and a penalty shot was called. Chris Babiarz made the attempt for DCE, but Siclovan negated the effort, much to the joy of the SPASH student section sitting directly behind him.

Less than a minute later Moe stopped yet another breakaway, keeping Everest in the game. The period ended with the 2-0 SPASH lead and a 13-10 lead in shots as well.

SPASH broke the game open late in the second period with two goals scored in a span of just over three minutes. Keller scored his second at 12:07 with a rebound in front, and then at 15:17 Max Tatro fired a shot from the right point that bounced off Moe's stick and into the net for a 4-0 Panthers lead. Tatro and Brock Caufield were credited with assists on the goals.

Not to be outdone, the Evergreens cut the lead to 4-1 just 15 seconds later on a goal by Brady Borrell, with assists to Babiarz and Michael Plaza.

SPASH held a 10-8 shot advantage in the period.

Each team had a breakaway chance early in the third, but Siclovan and Moe came up big to keep the puck out of the net. In the middle of the period, each team had a power play chance but was unable to score as time wound down.

The Panthers put goal number five on the board with an acrobatic effort by Jaworski. He grabbed a pass while playing on the PK unit and took off down the middle of the ice, leaving the white-clad defenders in his wake. Jaworski cut right across the slot and hurdled over Moe while sliding the puck past the DCE goaltender for the 5-1 lead with just over five minutes left. Mason Czaikowski and Hucke were marked down for helpers on the effort.

The Evergreens closed out the scoring while on the power play. Borrell punched in a rebound with 2:51 left to make the final 5-2. Babiarz and Plaza once again teamed up for assists.

Siclovan stopped 28 shots for SPASH, while Moe had 23 saves for DCE, who finish the season with a record of 14-11.

The Panthers (13-11) earned the right to take on #1 seed Wausau West Tuesday night at Marathon Park.
