Wings defeat KMMO, Waunakee and Madison Memorial to win Championship

The Waukesha Wings wrapped up their 2nd tournament win of the season on Saturday by beating the Madison Memorial Spartans in the Championship game of the Ground Hog Tournament. The Wings beat KMMO 3-0 on Thursday to start the tournament and then defeated Waunakee 11-0 on Friday to earn their championship bid against the Spartans.

In the championship game, the Wings took command early by scoring four goals in the 1st period. The first one came in at just 1:54 off of a face-off from Joe Mason with an assist by Nick Ligocki. The second goal was scored by Logan Geisness at the 3:16 mark of the period and assisted by Zed Dietrich & Ian Malcolmson. This line struck two more times before the end of the period as Malcolmson and Dietrich both added goals with assists coming from Geisness, Dietrich and Malcolmson.  Waukesha’s goalie Jake Kupsky and Memorial’s goalie Ryan Kenny made 6 saves each.

The second period was evenly matched as shots were Waukesha 14 to Memorials 13 with Waukesha scoring the only goal at the 15:49 mark by Malcolmson and assisted by Dietrich to make it a 5-0 game after the second period. The Wings Kupsky made 14 saves and Memorial’s Kenny made 12.

In the third period, the Wings handled a valiant effort and no quit attitude from Memorial as they outshot the Wings 21-8 in the third. Memorial’s Ty Pelton –Byce struck on the power play from a scramble in front of the Wings net.  This goal not only ended Kupsky’s shutout streak in the tournament, but also ended an incredible 16 period streak of not allowing any goals against. The wings Dietrich struck one more time late in the third with an assist from Lucas Slowik giving the Wings a 6-1 victory and their 1st Ground Hog Tournament win.

The Wings had five players recognized for their stellar tournament play. Jacob Kupsky earned the goalie honor for 1st All-Tournament team with his 99% save percentage with 107 saves on 108 shots.  Zed Dietrich who scored 6 goals and added 10 assists along with Logan Geisness who scored 6 goals and added 5 assists were also both named to the 1st All-Tournament team as forwards. The wings also had two players recognized on the 2nd All-Tournament team as well. Ian Malcolmson who scored 4 goals and added 8 assists and Wyatt Wilderman scoring 1 goal and adding 2 assists.

The tournament consisted of the following 8 teams Waukesha, Madison Memorial, Monona Grove, Waunakee, KMMO, Oregon, Stoughton and Sun Prairie.
