Strong defensive efforts by both teams in 4-1 win

In the Boys Game of the Week, the honorable mention Superior Spartans headed to Hudson to take on the sixth ranked Raiders in a Section 1 battle. Both teams played a physical game that left the score tied after two periods. A strong third period for the Raiders gave them the 4-1 edge.

Hudson came out ready to play and didn’t take any time to pick up the physicality of the game. The first period found lots of end-to-end action that allowed both teams to showcase the strength of their defensive players.

At 6:31 in the fist period, Superior’s Grant Hanson headed to the box on a holding call that gave the Raiders the first powerplay of the game. Superior stepped up, and they didn’t allow a single powerplay shot on net.

Just 50 seconds after the first penalty, the refs called Hudson’s Charlie Singerhouse for slashing, and play was evened at four players.

With three minutes and 45 seconds left in the period, Hudson tallied the first point of the game. A.J. Romanoski fired a shot from the bottom of the circle that Superior goaltender Paxton Paine kicked away, but Iver Baribeau was there for the rebound. He snuck his stick through lots of traffic and pushed the rebound through the 5-hole of Paine for the goal.

Even with a tripping penalty on Baribeau 3:08 into the second period, the first 10 minutes passed with only one shot on net for each team, a true statement for the quality defense of both teams.

At 13:32 in the period, Hudson had an opportunity to extend their lead when Superior forward Caden Tchop was called for tripping.

Aaron Miller had a different plan, though.

He caught a pass from Tyler Nystrom and battled through Hudson defenseman Tanner Hanson to the slot before regaining possession of the puck. With 3:04 remaining in the period, he took a shot that flew past Hudson goaltender Cody Hepfler and into the top right corner of the net to tie the game.

Miller’s goal gave Superior the momentum coming in to the third, but a slashing penalty on Tchop leveled the play once again.

While Hudson couldn’t capitalize on the powerplay, they used the tilt in their favor.

Shortly after the penalty expired, Carter Schuett caught a pass from Trey LaBarge at the blue line for a breakaway opportunity. He rifled a shot top shelf past Paine, and the Raiders once again took the lead.

A minute and two seconds after Schuett scored, Hudson found the back of the net once again. Parker Shefveland took a shot from the left side that bounced over Paine but not into the net. As Superior’s defensemen tried to clear the puck, sticks got tangled and the puck crossed the goal line to extend Hudson’s lead to 3-1 with 11:46 to play.

Superior pulled their goaltender with 1:38 to play in an attempt to narrow the lead with an extra attacker. Shefveland sunk the empty net goal to ensure the win for Hudson.
