Spartans hold commanding 37-6 shot edge

The picture in the slideshow shows a Superior player flying through the air after a big check, but that was one of the few times Marquette held the upper hand as the Spartans claimed a 3-0 win Sunday afternoon in the 'Showdown in Titletown' at the Cornerstone Community Center Rink #3.

Superior got on the board midway through the first period on a rebound goal by Mark Shold, with an assist to Grant Hanson. The score came at 7:55.

The period ended 1-0 with Superior outshooting the Hilltoppers 12-0.

The Spartans increased the lead to 2-0 on a nice goal by Daniel Mikel. The senior forward beat a defender and ripped a shot from the slot that eluded Marquette goalie Scott Pelkowski at 8:08. Tyler Nystrom and Jesse Polson earned assists on the scoring play.

Aaron Miller made it 3-0 when he grabbed a pass and launched a shot from the high slot that beat the goalie high on the glove side. Mikel and Mitch Anderson were credited with helpers on the play.

The period ended with Superior holding a commanding 15-3 shot margin.

The Spartans almost got a fourth goal late in the final period, but Dylan Conklin's shot from the left dot clanged off the left post and passed behind Pelkowski without ending in the net.

The Marquette junior netminder was busy once again in the final period, stopping all ten shots fired on him and ending with a game total of 34 saves. Junior Peyton Flanders was significantly less busy on the other end, tallying three saves in the period and six in the contest.
