Bresser notches two goals and an assist in 5-3 ECM victory

Jake Bresser scored twice and notched an assist in helping the Eau Claire Memorial Old Abes past the Madison Edgewood Crusaders 5-3 Sunday afternoon in the 'Showdown in Titletown' at the Cornerstone Community Center.

The Abes got on the board less than two minutes in with Charley Graaskamp's goal from the left circle. Austin Phippen earned an assist on the play.

Edgewood had a nice chance on a 2-on-1 a couple minutes later, but ECM goalie Alex Geving made a nice glove save, stretching to his left to snag the puck headed for the net.

Three minutes later, Edgewood goalie Tony Rehm returned the favor as he stoned Bresser's attempt to score with a left pad save, kicking the puck into the corner.

The Crusaders tied the game at 7:55 when Eliot Friedow took a pass on the left wing, motored down to the top of the left circle and ripped a shot that beat Geving for the power play goal, with Cal Frederick earning an assist.

Bresser gave ECM a 2-1 lead at 10:12 when he picked up a loose puck in the NZ, skated to the mid-slot and fired a shot that beat the Edgewood netminder.

Just 27 seconds later, Bresser notched his second goal when he raced into the Edgewood d-zone, deked the goalie and snuck the puck past the left pad that had denied him earlier in the period. Sam Hanson was credited with an assist.

Nick Kanoff cut the lead to 3-2 when he scooped up a pass at center ice, drove to the high slot and fired a cannon on net that beat the goalie. Justin and Jake Dragoo earned helpers on the score.

When it looked like Memorial would go to the locker room with a one-goal lead, Grant Reichenbacher scored a last-minute goal with just five seconds left. Jake Dragoo fought for a loose puck behind the net, and then sent a pass out to Reichenbacher who buried it past the goalie's blocker.

Shots were 12-11 in the period, in favor of the Old Abes.

Coach Mike Schwengler was looking to change things up, so Nick Schreiter replaced Geving to start the second period.

The second period was quiet on the scoresheet, with the only marks showing two penalties on ECM. Luckily for the Abes, Edgewood was unable to convert on the man advantage opportunities.

Rehm stopped 14 shots in the period, while Schreiter turned aside a pair of shots.

The Old Abes grabbed the lead just 17 seconds into the third when Bresser sent a pass across to the low right side and Dylan Ross did not miss.

Kadin Machusak accounted for the final score when he re-directed a point blast by Chuck Bennis past Rehm at the 6:30 mark.

Memorial outshot Edgewood 12-6 in the final period.

Schreiter (8) and Geving (8) combined for 16 saves for the win, while Rehm stopped 33 pucks for the Crusaders.
