Central Wisconsin holds 44-8 shot edge in contest

This week's Wisconsin Prep Hockey Girls Game of the Week pitted a team that had seven players who had scored at least five goals this season (second-ranked Central Wisconsin) against a team that allowed only 22 goals all year (#10 Icebergs).

The game played true to form Saturday afternoon, as the balanced Storm squad fired 44 shots on goal, but Icebergs top-ranked goalie Kenzie Torpy stopped 42 of them as the Storm defeated the visitors 2-0 at the Greenheck Fieldhouse.

Torpy--a junior netminder who won last year's Jessie Vetter Award as the top girl goalie in Wisconsin--got a little help from her friend, the left post, in the early going.

Kelly Knetter sprung free with the puck in the mid-slot and snapped a quick shot that caromed off the post and into the corner about three minutes in to keep the game scoreless.

The Storm got on the board exactly eight minutes in with some sisterly teamwork from Emily and Elizabeth Bauer. The sophomore twins got a goal and assist, respectively, when a pass from the left circle found Emily Bauer open on the back side and she slipped the puck into the net for a 1-0 Storm lead. Maggie Plaza also got an assist on the score.

Each team had a power play chance as the clock wound down in the first, but neither converted as the teams skated off with a 1-0 Storm lead at the first intermission. Torpy stopped 13 shots, while the Storms' Lisa Fowle made three saves in the first 17 minutes.

The Icebergs skated with determination in the middle period, keeping the Storm off the board while holding down the fort with only six players on the bench. The Storm outshot the guests 13-2 in the stanza.

The third period saw lots of action, but little scoring until an Icebergs penalty with just under five minutes left.

As the infraction time was winding down, the Storm put a shot on Torpy from the low right side. She made the initial save, but when she attempted to cover the puck with her glove, the puck squirted free and Megan Marlowe was able to sneak the puck up and over into the net for a 2-0 Storm lead. Knetter and Plaza earned assists at the score at the 13:46 mark.

The buzzer sounded on a 2-0 win for Central Wisconsin, who improved to 15-3-1.

Shots were 17-3 in favor of the home girls. Fowle stopped eight shots for her state-leading ninth shutout. On the other end, Torpy maintained her torrid pace, stopping 42 shots while keeping her season save percentage at an amazing .958 for the Icebergs, who dropped to 11-6-2.
