Bruneau scores twice to lead Point-Rapids

After a scoreless opening period, Point-Rapids scored three times in a span of ten minutes in the second and added a late third period goal to defeat Great Northern Conference foe Marshfield 4-1 Monday night at Ice Hawks Arena in Stevens Point.

The Red Panthers (7-5-2, 6-1 GNC) outshot the Tigers 8-5 in the first period before breaking out their offense in the middle period.

Rachel Metz got things started for Point-Rapids with her goal at the 3:32 mark, with assists to Hannah Beilke and Katrina Hassig.

Just over four minutes later, Kaylee Bruneau grabbed a stretch pass and after the defender fell down, went in on a semi-breakaway and beat Marshfield goalie Alexis Straughan on the blocker side to make the score 2-0. Rachel Nolan was given an assist on the play.

Late in the period, Bruneau scored her second goal of the evening when she picked up a loose puck in the slot and put the puck in the back of the net to increase the lead to 3-0. Bryar Brooks was credited with the helper at 13:33.

Straughan was busy in the period, making 15 saves, while on the other end Emily Bubla stopped six shots.

Marshfield got back into the game in the third when Nell Eichten scored during a goalmouth scramble at the 4:31 mark. Morgan Larson and Patti Jo Bloczynski earned assists on the play that cut the lead to 3-1.

Three minutes later the Tigers went on a power play and called a timeout to set up the offense, but the Red Panthers stood tall and kept the puck out of the net.

Hailey Ehr scored the Red Panthers fourth goal with an extra-effort play. The puck appeared to be covered by Straughan, but Ehr saw the puck as being loose and kept digging until she flipped it into the net at 10:57. Hassig got her second assist on the score.

The Red Panthers had 1:47 of 5-on-3 with over five minutes left, but Straughan and her penalty kill group turned stingy and held the home team scoreless.

Shots were even at seven in the final 17 minutes of play.

Bubla stopped 17 shots in earning the win, while Straughan turned away 29 pucks in the contest for Marshfield, who dropped to 4-8 (4-4 GNC).
