Sophomore scores once and adds playmaker in 9-1 win

Katrina Hassig forgot to bring her usual #19 jersey with her Friday night and as a result, had to borrow the #31 of goalie Emily Bubla.

Maybe she should lobby for a number switch.

The sophomore forward scored once and added three assists as the Point-Rapids Red Panthers skated past the Medford Raiders 9-1 at the Simek Center in Medford.

The Red Panthers scored four times in the opening period.

Rachel Metz started the scoring early when she took a pass from Hassig, who was stationed behind the net, and beat Medford goalie Makayla Hanson at the 3:30 mark of the first.

Less than two minutes later, Carolyn Storch tallied her first varsity goal with an assist to Hannah Beilke at 4:58.

Kiana Coombs made it 3-0 when she took a cross-slot pass and buried the biscuit from the low right side at 14:13, with assists to Bryar Brooks and Taylor Gregorich.

Then with just 25 seconds left in the period, Metz notched her second goal of the game with a sweet backhander from the bottom of the left circle. Coombs got the assist as the period ended with the guests holding a 4-0 lead.

Hanson stopped nine shots for Medford while Red Panthers goalie Merina Chappel made six saves in the period.

The second period was fairly even as each team scored one goal.

The Raiders cut the lead to 4-1 with Sienna Demulling's power play goal. The sophomore got the puck in the high slot and while moving right to left, snuck a shot past Chappel at the six minute mark. Elise Southworth got a helper on the play.

Hassig scored on the power play just over six minutes later when she gathered up a loose puck and skated down the left side before beating the Medford netminder with a shot from the left dot at 12:39. Rachel Nolan earned the helper on the score.

The period ended with Chappel stopping 12 shots, as did Emily Lybert, who spelled Hanson after the first period.

The third period was all Red Panthers, as they scored four times, included a goal just under six minutes in to put the game to run-time.

Brooks and Amanda Milanowski scored less than two minutes apart early in the period, and then Nolan and Hailey Ehr added late goals to account for the 9-1 final. Hassig would add two assists, while Storch and Ehr had one apiece.

There was a critical  moment when Lybert went down hard after a collision with just over twelve minutes left, but after a couple minutes, skated off on her own and was replaced by Hanson.

Chappel stopped six shots in the stanza for a game total of 23, while Lybert (5) and Hanson (14) combined for 19 saves in the final period and ended with 16 and 23, respectively.

The Red Panthers improved to 5-5-2 (4-1 Great Northern Conference), while Medford falls to 0-9 (0-5 GNC).
