Robins score twice in the third period for 2-1 victory

High school hockey teams don't often play two games in one day, and the fatigue showed on Saturday night as the Antigo Red Robins laid claim to their own holiday tournament trophy by downing long-time rival DC Everest 2-1 at the Langlade County Ice Arena.

As expected, the game started off slowly. Only 11 shots fired on goal in the first period, 5 by the Robins and 6 by the Evergreens. None made it past the goaltenders.

Antigo seemed to show the fatigue more in the second period, and although the shots were even, DC Everest grabbed control and the lead in the frame. Michael Plaza came into the Robins zone on the right side with Brady Borell barreling down the slot on a 2 on 1. Plaza used Borell as a decoy, getting Robin goalie Ryan Schmidt to move enough his way and allow Plaza to fire the puck through the small opening.

The Evergreens held the slim lead into the third period when the Robins scored a pair of power play goals. “Our special teams are playing at a very high level and the momentum they generate is crucial to our success,” said Robins head coach Matt Borneman.

Alex Nagel tied the game with a slapshot from the top of the left face-off circle that beat Evergreens netminder Michael Moe on the short side at 2:16. Two and a half minutes later, Jackson Charlesworth fired a shot from high slot that caromed off an Evergreen defenseman's shin guard and into the net to give Antigo a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.

“We battled through an intense old rivalry matchup, capitalized on our opportunities, and finally finished a game,” said Coach Borneman after the game.

Michael Moe ended the game with 9 saves, while Ryan Schmidt had 24.
