Pirates win 4-2 in Antigo Tournament

The Bay Port Pirates and the DC Everest Evergreens swapped goals until late in the third period when the Pirates were awarded a controversial third goal that the Evergreens could not match. Bay Port added an empty-netter late for a 4-2 win at the Antigo Holiday Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates scored the only goal of the first period, with just 42 seconds left. It came on a 2 on 1 that almost took too long. Tony Cavil entered the Evergreens zone along the left side with Austin Mikesch streaking down the slot. Cavil drove the defenseman deep then slid a pass across to Mikesch. Instead of shooting, as Everest goalie Michael Moe slid across the front of the net, Mikesch passed the puck back across to Cavil, who promptly buried it in the back of the open net.

Everest knotted it up at 9:21 of the second period as the result of a 5 on 3 power play. The Evergreens worked the puck around until they got Alex Degner free on the edge of the slot. His shot beat Bay Port goalie Sean Angle cleanly to make it 1 goal each.

The Pirates took the lead again just 1:25 into the third period, scoring on another 2 on 1 opportunity. This time Krystof Konacek gained the zone with the puck and a streaking Logan Froberg charging down the slot. Konacek timed his pass perfectly so Froberg had to redirect it past the outstretched leg of Moe.

The Evergreens tied it up again at 7:34 on a harmless-looking dump in from just inside the red line. The puck went wide of the Bay port goal and bounced off the backboards to come out on the other side of the net. Michael Plaza was the first one there and he fired a one-timer past a surprised Angle.

Late in the period, the Pirates got another odd-man rush up the ice and Froberg again fired a shot the hit either the cross bar or the back inside pipe, and then bounced out. The fans and coaches along the glass on that end all signaled no-goal. The referee signaled goal. The Evergreens said it didn't go in. The Pirates celebrated the goal in the corner. No goal judge to confer with. No overhead replay to check back in Toronto. The referee was in good position to make the call and it stood, much to the dismay of DC Everest.

Froberg added an empty net goal late to earn his hattrick on the night, and Bay Port skated off with a 4-2 win. Sean Angle and Michael Moe each recorded 25 saves for the night.
