Superior Pulls Off Upset

The 2013 Culver's Cup featured four teams currently ranked in the Wisconsin Prep Hockey top ten.

The first game of the day featured the Badger Thunder vs the St. Croix Valley Fusion.  The Fusion's Natalie Gabbert gave #3 St. Croix Valley the early lead at 12:35 of the first period with Hanna Zevenbergen assisting on the play.  The period ended with the Fusion leading 1-0.  Jamie Dutton had 13 saves for the Thunder, while Carlie Christensen had seven saves for St. Croix Valley.

Hanna Zevenbergen pushed the Fusion lead to 2 with an assist from McKayla Custer at 14:36 of the second period.  The Thunder got back into the game on a goal by Rachel Pawlak with Justine Bradley being credited with the assist with 11 seconds remaining in the second period.  Christensen had 1 save in the period and Dutton had 7 saves.

Pawlak tied the game at 4:48 of the third period with Kristen South and Kathryn Vander Shaaf assisting.  The Fusion regained the lead at 5:55, when Maddie Rowe and Tori Forseth assisted on Allie Demotts goal.  Fusion won 3-2.  Christensen finished with 12 saves, while Dutton had 34 saves for the Badger Thunder.

The #6 Northland Pines Eagles took on the Brookfield Glacier in game two.  The Eagles took the lead early and never relinquished control in this game.  Cali Sanborn opened the scoring at 2:12 of the first with an assist from Amanda Sergent.  Sergent scored the second goal with Kali Ebert and Sallie Spencer assisting at 7:25 of the first.  Ebert scored the third goal with an assist from Sergent at the 15:03 mark.  Twenty-three seconds later Sanborn collected her second goal with an assist from Ebert.  Jenna Bales had 21 saves for the Glacier, while Jenna Paez had 6 saves for the Eagles at the end of the first.

Natalie Decker scored an unassisted goal for the Eagles at 1:35 of the second.  Then at 8:02 of the second Jessica Roach coverted on a power play opportunity with an assist from Sanborn.  The Eagles lead 6-0 at the end of two.  Paez had 6 saves, while Bales had 20 saves.

Sergent scored the first goal in the third period with an assist from Sanborn and Ebert at the 2:15 mark.  Thirty-one seconds later Allison Sauvola scored the Eagles final goal with Mariah Miller and Lauren Czarapata assisting.  Brookfields' Isabel Pesci broke up the shutout with an assist from Alyssa Albee at 16:31 of the third period.  Bales finished the game with 45 saves, while Paez had 21 saves.

The third game had the Point-Rapids Red Panthers playing the #4 USM Wildcats.  The Wildcats scored two goals in the first period.  Nina Andersen scored the first goal with an assist from Caitlin McBride.  The second goal was scored by Nicole Unsworth with Andersen assisting.  The third period saw Rose Revolinski score the final goal of the game with Andersen and Unsworth assisting.  Heidi Golembiewski had 9 saves for the Wildcats.  Merina Chappel had 16 saves of 18 shots for the Red Panthers in the first 22:42, while Emily Bubla finished the game stopping 31 of 32 shots in the final 28:18.

The final game of the day was the Superior Spartans against the #9 Metro Lynx.  Superior's Devyn Moss opened the scoring with Ari Jago assisting at 4:15 of the second period.  Siera Petet tied the game for the Lynx with McKenzie Imhoff assisting with 7:47 remaining in the second period.

Emma Petrson scored an unassisted goal 30 seconds into the third period giving the Spartans a 2-1 lead.  Samantha Young increased the lead to 2 with an assist from Petrson and Jordyn Thompson at 7:06 of the third.  The Lynx cut into the lead making the score 3-2, but could get no closer, on a goal by Jordann Herrling with Anna Buna assisting at 13:56 of the third.  Hunter Kurbel had 24 saves for the Lynx, while Justine Stenberg had 28 saves for the Spartans.
