Wings win 4-0 over Bluebirds

In the opening game of the Joe Raymond Memorial Holiday Hockey Classic, the Waukesha Wings took on the Janesville Bluebirds. The Wings scored twice in both the second and third periods, giving them a 4-0 win in the first game of the tournament.

Waukesha took hold in the first period with fast quality shots on net and a strong penalty kill that kept them in the Janesville zone for the majority of the period despite lots of penalties.

The second period found Waukesha spending a lot of time in the penalty box. Wyatt Wilderman, Nick Ligocki, Alex Runge and Zed Dietrich each served two minutes in the period, but the penalty kill unit stood strong each time and didn’t allow a goal.

Nine minutes and 52 seconds into the second period, after Waukesha took over on the powerplay, Logan Geisness put the first point on the board. Geisness wound up taking a shot that was deflected by Bluebird goaltender, Michael MacDougall, before being picked up by Coe Venes who made another attempt on net. Zed Dietrich passed the puck over to Geisness who took a shot that went over MacDougall’s left pad and into the back of the net.

Less than a minute and a half later, the Wings scored another powerplay goal. This time, Nick Ligocki earned the goal with assists going to Venes and Dietrich.

The Bluebirds came into the third period on the powerplay after a hooking penalty on Dietrich with 17 seconds left in the second period, but they could not get past Wings goaltender, Jake Kupsky.

Dietrich sought redemption for his time in the box and found the back of the net just 3:59 into the third. He picked up a pass from Geisness at the blue line, driving up the slot before taking a backhanded shot over the right shoulder of the Bluebird’s goalie.

Shortly after, Ian Malcolmson scored Waukesha’s fourth, and last, goal of the night. Dietrich passed the puck to Michael Berens who took a shot from the point that took a funny bounce in front of the net and was deflected in by Malcolmson.

Kupsky made 24 saves in the shutout, and MacDougall made 27 saves.
