5-2 win for Hilltoppers

In the semi-final game of the Admirals Cup, the Marquette Hilltoppers faced the De Pere Voyageurs for the opportunity to play in the Championship. Despite a valiant effort by De Pere, the Hilltoppers earned their place in the Championship game of the tournament with a 5-2 victory.

Marquette seemed to control the majority the play from the beginning of the game. Just two minutes and three seconds into the first period, Marquette got on the board with a goal by Patrick Reiman from Jack Lewis.

Shortly after the Voyageurs’ goaltender, Bennett Berg, was put to the test again. Jack Lewis picked up the puck at the blue line and squeaked past two De Pere defensemen for a great breakaway opportunity that Berg was able to stop.

The game seemed to tilt in the Hilltoppers’ favor once again when De Pere’s Brett Foth was assessed a penalty that gave Marquette the powerplay with 9:31 to play in the period.

Junior Captain Will Reabe took no notice to the one-man disadvantage, cutting off a pass at the blue line and effortlessly making his way to the front of the net where he deked to the left of the goalie and took a backhand shot that went bar-down into the goal over the top of Pelkowski.

The second period found the same pattern as Marquette came off of the opening faceoff strong and scored just 31 seconds into the second period. This time, Jack Lewis got a goal of his own assisted by Aaron Chaffee. A short 23 seconds later, Marquette struck again. Jackson Weiss found the back of the net with the helpers going to Patrick Llaurado and Charles Bolles.

These two quick goals caused De Pere to replace Bennett Berg with Brett Guerts in net.

Marquette found a quick start in the third period yet again with a goal by Weiss from Charles Bolles. De Pere had some good looks in the period, but they seemed to misread where some of their teammates would be.

Just after the interference penalty on Marquette’s Nolan Diffley had expired, the Voyageurs found the net to narrow the lead to two goals with a score of 4-2. Reabe was credited with the goal, his second of the night, assisted by Zach Langer.

De Pere made the decision to pull their goaltender with just about 2:20 to play in the game. Although they were not able to capitalize, they held off the Hilltoppers until the last 33 seconds when Weiss scored an empty net goal, his second of the night, assisted by Bolles, his third assist of the night, which game him a playmaker.

The Hilltoppers are set to play the Homestead Highlanders in the Championship game of the Admiral Cup on Friday, December 27 at the Bradley Center at 2:46 pm.
