Empty netter by Shober ensures FDL win

In the second game of the Admirals Cup, the Fond du Lac Cardinals took on the Germantown Ice Bears at the Mullett Center.

The Cardinals came out strong in the first period, scoring two goals and controlling the majority of the play.

Just four minutes and 22 seconds into the first, Bailey Koenigs shot the puck past Germantown goaltender Zac Gazzana, scoring a goal with an assist from his brother, Chase Koenigs.

After killing a penalty on Michael Wilson that had been assessed seven minutes and 46 seconds into the period, the Cardinals were given their opportunity with the advantage. A charging penalty was assessed to Germantown’s Trevor Herzberg with 5:52 to play, and Fond du Lac capitalized.

Bailey Koenigs struck again, this time with assists from Ian Tess-Wanat and Alex Graf, to extend their lead to 2-0.

The second period was a bit more even after the Ice Bears killed off a 5-minute major penalty for checking from behind on Evan Rentmeester.

Later in the period, Fond du Lac’s Bailey Koenigs was called for a hooking penalty, which gave Germantown the advantage with 2:33 left to play in the second.

The Ice Bears found the net with just 33 seconds to play in the period on a goal scored by Ryan Ruona assisted by Nick Peterson. That goal tightened the Cardinals lead to only one goal and gave Germantown the momentum coming in to the third period.

In the third period, both teams seemed to be fighting harder for their place in the championship bracket of the tournament.

Lots of back and forth play allowed for many shots on net and left Germantown with no option but to pull their netminder with 52 seconds left in the game. The Ice Bears called a timeout to regroup before returning to the ice with an extra skater.

Although Germantown fought hard, they were unable to tie up the game, and an empty net goal accredited to William Shober ensured Fond du Lac’s win.

Gazzana stopped a total of 26 shots in the game while Shober stopped 14.
