10-0 win for the Highlanders

In game one of the Admirals Cup, the Homestead Highlanders took on the Whitefish Bay/Nicolet/Shorewood Storm at the Mullett Center. While the Storm outshot the Highlanders 29-25, Homestead dominated the scoring, winning the game 10-0.

Just 14 seconds into the first period, Homestead’s Cole Simpson scored an unassisted goal that gave the Highlanders a lead that remained for the rest of the game.

The refs assessed a hooking penalty to the Highlanders’ Daniel Scozzafave, giving the Storm a one-man advantage. They could not capitalize, though, and Ryan Mezera scored a shorthanded goal assisted by Adam Hobbs.

The second period saw lots of scoring by the Highlanders and many attempts by the Storm. Homestead’s defense remained strong, and goaltender David Hathaway fended off the seven shots that came his way.

Simpson found the back of the net for the second time that morning just one minute and 39 seconds into the second period with a goal assisted by Michael Schulz.

A hooking penalty on WNS’ captain Colin Downing gave Homestead the advantage for the one and only time that game. Riley Dixon made use of the advantage, scoring 38 seconds into the powerplay. Brady Bjork and Simpson earned assists on the play.

The next two goals slid through the five-hole of WNS’ freshman goalie, Robert Ali. Adam Hobbs took the puck up the right-hand side of the ice alongside Jake Hansen who took the shot from the right faceoff dot. A few minutes later, Hobbs earned himself an unassisted goal in just about the same fashion.

Jon Weyker scored the last goal of the period with an assist from Schulz, extending the lead to 7-0 after two periods.

The Highlanders scored three more goals in the third period, all three scored by seniors.

Ryan Mezera scored the first at with 13:09 left to play, an assist going to Hansen.

Later in the period, Hansen snuck through two defensemen at the blue line and scored top shelf, glove side on a nice breakaway. Jesse Nye scored the 10th goal of the game just 30 seconds after Hansen’s. Simpson got the helper on the play.
