Eau Claire-Altoona wins shot battle, 37-16

It was only fitting that on a snowy, dreary December evening, the outcome of a hockey game was less than desirable for both teams. After 59 minutes of play, the Eau Claire-Altoona Stars and the Point-Rapids Red Panthers called it quits at one apiece at the KB Willett Arena in Stevens Point Friday night.

To say the start was slow would be an understatement; the Stars put their first shot on net four minutes into the period, while it took the home team over ten minutes before they tested ECA goalie Miranda Bestul.

The first period was scoreless, with Bestul stopping two shots and Red Panther goalie Merina Chappel making 11 saves.

The visitors got on the board first at the 10:47 mark of the middle period. Mikayla Otto grabbed a loose puck behind the Red Panther net and put a shot on net that trickled between Chappel's pads to make it 1-0. Mariah Werner was given an assist on the play.

The period ended with the scoreboard showing a 1-0 ECA lead. Chappel had 11 stops, while Bestul made four saves.

The Red Panthers (3-5) knotted the score on a second effort by senior forward Kiana Coombs. She took a shot from the mid-slot, but Bestul made the initial stop. Coombs collected her own rebound and fired the shot over the goalie's blocker at 5:04, with helpers going to Breanna Conrad and Emily Exner.

Despite three penalties per side in the period, neither team could take advantage of their power play opportunities.

Chappel had 11 saves, while Bestul stopped seven pucks in the third regulation period.

The Red Panthers had a power play chance in the extra period but could not convert.

As the horn sounded on a 1-1 tie, the final saves tally showed Bestul stopping 15 pucks in the win for ECA (3-4), while Chappel made 36 saves in her first varsity start for Point-Rapids.
