Metz leads Red Panthers past Lakeland

Senior captain notches five points in GNC win


Rachel Metz scored a hat trick and added two assists to lead the Point-Rapids Red Panthers past the Lakeland Thunderbirds 9-0 on a snowy Tuesday evening at Minocqua's Lakeland Hawks Ice Arena.

The senior captain got the guests on the board at 3:51 with her goal from the slot area. Katrina Hassig was given an assist on the play.

With just under five minutes left to play in the first, Metz scored her second goal while on the penalty kill. She grabbed a loose puck behind the net and beat T-Bird goalie Annika Nimsgern between pad and post for a 2-0 lead. Hassig earned her second assist on the play.

The period ended with the 2-0 lead even though shots were almost even at 13-12, in favor of the Red Panthers.

The visitors tacked on four in the middle period to send the game to run time with under a minute remaining in the period.

Kiana Coombs scored on an unassisted goal from the high slot at 6:46 to make it 3-0. Freshman Kaylee Bruneau scored her first varsity goal at 10:29, with assists to Emily Exner and Coombs to increase the margin to 4-0.

Less than a minute later, Hailey Ehr wristed in a loose puck from the mid-slot to make the score 5-0, with assists to Metz and Hassig, who earned her playmaker on the score.

Then with just 19.4 ticks left on the clock, Hannah Beilke notched a goal with help from Metz and Taylor Gregorich.

Shots were 16-10 in favor of the road team.

The Red Panthers finished off the scoring with three goals in just over four minutes early in the final period.

Breanna Conrad, Metz, and Bruneau scored to make it 9-0, with assists to Gregorich and Bryar Brooks.

Shots were 12-2 in favor of Point-Rapids.

Emily Bubla (20) and Merina Chappel (4) split game time and finished with a combined 24 saves for Point-Rapids, who improved to 3-4 (3-1 GNC).

The freshmen Nimsgern, in her first year of playing goalie, did a nice job, stopping 32 pucks fired at her.

Lakeland falls to 1-3 (1-3 GNC).
