Fine Effort By MacDougall In Net Not Enough

Tuesday night's game featuring the Janesville Bluebirds and Madison West Regents saw a battle between two teams with similarities.

Good goaltending, great top lines, and good special teams.

But it was the Regents who were able to get the 4-1 win.

Janesville's goalie Michael MacDougall did all he could on this night to keep it close.

"Guys were coming back to the bench shaking their heads," said Madison West Coach Bret Farley. "We hit him in the helmet a few times with shots and in the belly with a couple but nothing would go in."

West scored the first goal of the game on a faceoff win in the offensive zone. The faceoff was won and West got the puck to Cole Gaskus, whose wrister gave West a 1-0 lead in the first period.

Janesville got on the board with a goal early in the second period from Tyler Perkins, who got West netminder Henry Cutting short side low with a shot to make it a 1-1 game. MacDougall was able to keep the Regent potent offense at bay for almost the whole period.

Almost.

The Regents won a battle in the corner and the puck came out to the slot where Max Lentz zinged a quick wrist shot past MacDougall for a 2-1 lead thru two periods which saw the Janesville netminder make 16 saves.

Early in the third period Janesville had pressure in the West zone. West finally broke it out and got the break they needed when the Bluebirds were whistled for a tripping call. The Regents took advantage on a James Pretto power play goal to make it 3-1. From there Cutting kept Janesville off the board and with an empty netter from Mick Messner for the final 4-1 final score.

Coach Farley likes his team's start to the season.

"I am a little surprised with the start we've had to the season but there still is a ways to go," said Farley. "We only have three seniors so it's a good start for us."

West improves to 5-1, (4-1 Big Eight) with a Thursday game hosting Beloit, while Janesville falls to 4-3-1, (2-2-1 in conference) and travel Thursday to play the Eastside Lakers.

MacDougall ended with 33 saves while Cutting had 18 in the game.
