Warriors claim seventh straight Marathon Cup title

The Wausau West Warriors claimed their seventh straight Marathon cup title with a 2-0 win over the host DC Everest Evergreens on Saturday night.

Neither team has shown a great deal of offense thus far this season, so it wasn't a big surprise that the game was scoreless after two periods. The Evergreen defenders did a good job of denying time and space to West's big gun, Kevin Conley. At the same time, the Warrior defense was not allowing Everest to get anywhere near goalie Sam Wiegert, allowing just one shot in the first period and five in the second. Evergreens goalie Michael Moe stopped seven shots in each of the first two frames.

The Warriors finally cracked the seal at 2:28 in the third, Cale Bowman entered the Evergreens' zone on the left side on a two on one. He looked to his right and used the odd man as a decoy to get closer to the net. His shot from the bottom of the circle beat Moe on the short side. John Metzinger and Sam Radenz were credited with assists.

West added an insurance goal with just 2:01 remaining in the contest. With a loose puck in the Evergreens' crease a mad scramble to control, clear, or smother the puck ensued. Alex Gessler was able to get enough stick on it to direct it into the open net.

The third period saw the most action by far, with Wiegert stopping 9 shots for a game total of 15, and Moe making 11 saves, for a total of 25 on the night.
