2-0 Victory claims Third Place in Marathon Cup

The Mosinee Indians prevailed in a very physical third place Marathon Cup game, 2-0 over the Wausau East Lumberjacks on Saturday.

If you need proof that it was a rough game, just ask Ian Corbett, the recipient of a big hit by Mosinee's Zach Bornheimer. Corbett wasn't expecting the contact, since he was wearing goalie pads at the time, and there are rules against that sort of thing. For his transgression, Bornheimer received a 5 minute major penalty and a game misconduct for Head Contact.

For his part, Corbett had been frustrating the Indians all game, stopping 41 of the 43 shots sent his way.  It took two concentrated efforts by Mosinee to get the puck past him. At 12:48 in the first period, Austin McCarthy sent a shot in from the point. Corbett stopped it, but left a rebound. Landon Stepan jumped on the loose puck, and fired it towards the net. Again Corbett stopped it, but left another rebound. Matthew Sprink found the loose puck and some room under Corbett's pads to score the game's first goal.

McCarthy started the sequence again midway through the second period, this time with Jeremy Weinberg jumping on the first rebound, and freshman Zeth Pyan picking up his first varsity goal.

In front of the Mosinee net was another freshman, goaltender Zach Bednar. Zach faced only 14 shots in the game (5-2-7), and he stopped all of them.

There was also a scuffle as the final horn was sounding that lead to three minor roughing penalties added to the bottom of the score sheet.
