Blackhawks Improve to 3-1

Stalsberg Collect 5 Points in Win

Viroqua has started the 2013-14 season with an aura of confidence.  This could be due to having 12 seniors to lead the way, a 3 game winning streak or a combination of the two.  The Blackhawks traveled to Mose Lamb Ice Arena having won their previous two games including a 5-0 win over Oregon.

The game started with both teams moving the puck up and down the ice, but now one was able to get the puck past the goalie.  However, that changed at the 10:04 mark.  Zach Trautsch passed the puck forward to Mitchell Stalsberg.  Staleberg took the puck behind the net and found Malachy Koons to the left of Tomah goaltender Brody Pierce in the lower part of the face-off circle.  Koons took the shot and scored to put the Blackhawks up 1-0.  This was the only goal of the period.  Pierce finished the period with 10 saves, while Michael Severson had 9 saves for Viroqua.

The second period action started a little earlier in the period.  Stalsberg increased Viroqua's lead to 2, when he placed the puck in the net with Trautsch and Koons assisting on the play.  The Timberwolves cut the lead in half, when Steven Kacvinsky skated in on Severson and took the shot.  It appeared Severson made the save and then the puck trickled into the net with 2:24 left in the second period.  Tomah was called for a roughing penalty at 15:33 of the second period.  It looked as if the Timberwolves were going to escape the period trailing 2-1, but Trautsch scored a power play goal with 3 seconds showing on the clock with an assist from Koons.  The period ended with Viroqua leading 3-1.  Severson had 12 saves for a total of 21, while Pierce had 8 for a total of 18.

The third period started with the Timberwolves getting themselves back into the game, when Bishop King slipped the puck past Severson 31 seconds in.  Once again Viroqua responded, when Stalsberg scored his second goal of the game at 3:21 of the third period giving the Blackhawks a 4-2 lead. The Blackhawks increased the lead to 3 as Koons and Trautsch assisted Stalsberg on another goal with 5:43 left in the third period making the score 5-3.  Tomah used their timeout at 12:38 of the third.  The Timberwolves pulled their goalie with 1 minute remaining in the game.  Twelve seconds later Kacvinsky picked up his second goal with Bishop King and Josh Repaal assisting on the goal.  Tomah kept Pierce on the bench as they tried to battle closer, but Stalsberg took the wind out of the Timberwolves sails as he took a shot from just inside the blue line and put it in the empty net giving Viroqua a 6-3 victory.  Pierce finished the game with a total of 20 saves, while Severson had 31.
