Freshmen and sophs lead charge in 3-2 win

On a Fox Cities Stars team that only has a pair of seniors--talented as they may be--the underclassmen need to step up for a successful season. Those underclassmen scored all three goals and held off Hudson 3-2 Saturday at the Wisconsin River Classic in Wisconsin Rapids.

After a scoreless first period, Hudson got on the board first. Sydney Squires got behind the defense and burned down the right side, making a deke and pitchforking the puck high past the Fox Cities netminder for the tally at 1:39 of the second. Julia Douglas earned a helper on the play.

Fox Cities scored on back-to-back shots, albeit over a span of 2:30, to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Ally Fox blazed down the right side and wristed a shot from the right dot that beat Hudson goalie Julia Joseph on the glove side at 10:33. Abby Cardew and Liz Steinmetz received assists on the play.

Then sophomore Steinmetz got a loose puck while on a PK, drove hard and put a high shot that went bar-down past the Hudson goalie to make it 2-1 at 13:03. Senior Leigh McGuirk got an assist on the shortie.

Hudson tied the game less than two minutes later after a shot from the left point from Maddie Misura skipped off a stick in traffic and flew past FC goalie Morgan Talbot. Ali Takkunen got a assist on the score.

Midway throught the third, freshman Abby Cardew tallied the game-winner when her shot from the left side snuck through the five-hole of Joseph at 6:52. Fox earned a helper on the play.

Hudson took Joseph off with under a minute left for an extra skater, but was unable to score.

Talbot (8-11-5) stopped 24 shots in the contest, while Joseph (6-5-7) made 18 saves for Hudson.
