Montpetit stops 35 shots in 4-2 win

Bailey Erickson scored a natural hat trick, tallying one goal late in the first and the next two in the second period to lead the Western Wisconsin Stars past the Point-Rapids Red Panthers 4-2 Saturday morning in the Wisconsin River Classic at the South Wood County Rec Center.

Erickson opened the scoring with her backhander past Red Panther goalie Emily Bubla at 14:26 of the first, with assists to Alli Wielinski and Gabby Kupke.

That's how the period ended, with Bubla stopping eight shots and WW's Tina Montpetit making three saves.

The Stars junior center scored again at 5:05 from the low left side, assists going to Emma Lepper and Meghan Wolner. She finished up her scoring bonanza with a power play goal with just 39 seconds left in the period. Ashley Dusek earned an assist on the play.

Bubla stopped 11 shots in the period, while her WW counterpart Montpetit had 10 saves.

The Red Panthers (2-2) made things interesting in the final period, outshooting the Stars by a margin of 24-5, but Montpetit was up to task, stopping 22 of them.

Kiana Coombs scored a rebound goal from the slot to make it 3-1 just over two minutes into the final period. Katrina Hassig earned a helper on the play.

The momentum shifted back when a shot bounced off a Red Panther defender and into the net to make it 4-1 just twenty seconds later. Wielinski was credited with the goal, with an assist to Kupke.

Hannah Beilke cut the lead in half for the Red Panthers with her rebound goal at the 9:52 mark, with the assist going to Rachel Metz.

The Red Panther goalie came off for a extra attacker with less than a minute left, but the hosts were unable to put the puck into the net.

Montpetit ended with 35 saves for the win, while Bubla stopped 23 for Point-Rapids, stopping four shots in the final period.

Western Wisconsin raised its record to 3-2.
