Sneak Peek at Friday Night On the Ice

Badger Thunder (0-1-0, 1-1-0) at Icebergs (0-0-0, 1-2-0)

Badger Thunder opened the 2013-14 season with a very tough Badger Conference game against Sun Prairie and fell 6-1.  They followed that up with a 4-1 win over Black River Falls.  They opened the season without the skills of Rachel Pawlak (recovering from an injury), but have been led in scoring by Kathryn Vander Schaff with 3 goals.  Jamie Dutton leads the way in goal stopping 65 of 72 shots for a .903 save percentage.  The Thunder sport a younger roster, which will improve as their confidence grows during the season.

The Stoughton Co-op Icebergs opened the season playing three games in the Fond du Lac tournament.  Casey Marsh was second on the team last season in total points with 10 goals and 11 assists.  She has collected 4 goals and 1 assist in the first three games.  Rachel Dvorak was third on the team last season with 19 points (8 goals, 11 assists).  Dvorak has 2 goals and 3 assists this season.  The Icebergs are solid in goal with the return of the reigning Jessie Vetter Award winner in Mackenzie Torpy.  Torpy has stopped 103 of 109 shots for a .945 save percentage.  The Icebergs will spend the early part of the season, as many teams will, developing the cohesiveness and discovering where their scoring will come from.

Viroqua Blackhawks (0-0-0, 0-1-0) at Rock County Fury (0-1-0, 2-2-0)

The Blackhawks are looking to change things around this season.  They have a new coaching staff in head coach Billy Schultz and assistant Kjersten Olson.  This is Coach Schultz’s first prep coaching assignment.  He had coached the UW-La Crosse Women’s Hockey Club team from 2008-2010.  Coach Olson joins the high school team after several season in the Viroqua Youth program.  Viroqua has 12 new skaters out of 25 on the team this season.

The Fury will be playing their second conference game of the season.  Both of their losses have come at the hands of Badger Conference rival, Metro Lynx (one conference game and one in a tournament).  Ellie Woodman and Chelsea Gusk are tied for the lead in goals with four.  Four players (Morgan Jones, Diane Meason, Meghan McCarthy and Kayla Kaufman) are tied with 1 assist each to lead the team.  Madison Lewis and Molly Gross have split time in goal and each sport a 1-1-0 record.  Lewis has stopped 62 of 65 shots for a .954 save percentage, while Gross has stopped 63 of 70 for a .900 save percentage.

Medford Raiders (0-1-0, 0-1-0) at Lakeland Thunderbirds (0-1-0, 0-1-0)

The Raiders opened their season this past Monday against the Northland Pines Eagles and dropped the game 8-3.  Elise Southworth leads the Raiders in scoring with 2 goals.  Sienna Demulling and Katy Branstetter are tied for the lead in assists with one.  Emily Lybert and Makayla Hanson split the first game in net.

Lakeland opened the season on Monday, also.  They played a conference game against Tomahawk and fell 3-0.  Megan Hudy played the game in goal stopping 17 of 20 shots for an .850 save percentage.

Marshfield Tigers (0-1-0, 0-2-0) at #9 Northland Pines Eagles (1-0-0, 4-0-0)

Marshfield opened the season with a game against #2 Onalaska and followed that up with playing the Red Panthers in a Great Northern Conference game. Morgan Larson has the lone goal for the Tigers on the season, while Kaylee Geiger and Nell Eichten each have an assist.  Maddie Hall and Alexis Straughan have each played one game in goal.  Straughan played against Onalaska stopping 23 of 30 shots, while Maddie stopped 17 of 23 against Point-Rapids.

The Eagles started the season by picking up three wins in the Fond du Lac Tournament and followed that up with a conference win over Medford.  Amanda Sergent leads Northland Pines in scoring with 5 goals.  Jessie Wilkins leads the team in assists with four.  Jenna Parr has a .900 save percentage having stopped 54 of 60 shots and a 1.50 goals against average.

Tomahawk Hatchets (1-0-0, 1-0-0) at Northern Edge (1-0-0, 2-2-0)

Tomahawk opened the season with a 3-0 victory over Lakeland under new head coach Greg Vallier.  Erika Vallier leads the Hatchets in scoring after one game with 2 goals.  Leah Foster leads the team with one assist.  Erin Sparks stopped all 37 shots she faced in goal.

The Northern Edge opened the season going 1-2-0 in the Black River Falls Thanksgiving Tournament and followed that up with a 6-4 conference win over Waupaca.  Katie Detert leads the team in goals (6) and assists (5).  Shea Petersen has stopped 89 of 113 shots in goal for an .873 save percentage.

#8 Sun Prairie Cougars (1-0-0, 3-2-0) at #7 Metro Lynx (1-0-0, 4-0-0)

A clash to take the early lead in the Badger Conference will see Sun Prairie travel to the Madison Ice Arena to battle the Metro Lynx.  The Cougars started the season with two wins, but traveled to Baldwin for a Thanksgiving Tournament against the Fusion, Hayward and WSFLGUS.  Sun Prairie fell to St. Croix Valley Fusion and Hayward/Spooner Hurricanes, but picked up a win against the WSFLGUS Blizzard.  Alexis Peterson has started where she left off last season and leads the Cougars in scoring with 6 goals.  Freshman Annika Johnson leads the way in assists with 5.  Sarah Fuerstenberg has stopped 65 of 70 shots for a .929 save percentage and a 1.99 goals against average.  Dani Deltgen has a .929 save percentage having stopped 52 of 56 shots with a 1.62 goals against average.

The Metro Lynx has posted two victories over the Rock County Fury with one of them being a conference game and one in the Black River Falls Thanksgiving Tournament.  Their other two wins in the tournament came against Black River Falls and Waupaca.  Jordann Herrling and Lizzy Conybear are tied for the team lead in goals with 4 each.  Herrling and Samantha Dingle are tied for the team lead in assists with 3 each.  Taylor Colin has played 68 minutes in net, while Hunter Kurbel has 136 minutes in goal.  Colin has a .938 save percentage having stopped 15 of 16 shots and a 0.75 goals against average.  Kurbel has 34 saves out of 37 opportunities and a 1.12 goals against average.
