Wildcats win shot battle, 66-16

The University School co-op girls’ hockey team defeated the Brookfield Glacier 10-0 in an Eastern Shores Conference game at The Ponds Ice Arena in Brookfield Tuesday night.

The Wildcats dominated the game throughout, outshooting the Glacier 66-16 during the game. The Wildcats started slowly, scoring only twice in the opening period despite taking 28 shots in the 17-minute time frame.

After the period, USM’s head coach Jason Woods vehemently exhorted the Wildcats to play more of a team game and pass the puck more often.

The Wildcats listened and changed their style of play, to the benefit of the team. The team had more assists and, consequently, more goals.

Sophomore Caitlin McBride sparked the Wildcats, and melted the Glacier’s chances, by scoring two goals with in 12 seconds of each other early in the second period. They both came off of passes by junior Liza Sisk and senior Greta Kobylinski. Sisk had four assists during the game. Freshman Nicole Unsworth scored three goals for the Wildcats and had two assists. Junior Nina Andersen had two goals and two assists. McBride added an assist to her two-goal total; junior Rose Revolinski had one goal and two assists; and senior Greta Kobylinski had three assists on the night.

After the game Sisk said, “That was more points this game than in my entire high school ice hockey career so far. It felt so good. I’m working hard this year to become a key contributor to the team. I was glad to step up this game and facilitate our goal scoring.”

The Wildcats scored their first goal on a power play. They moved the puck around the Brookfield zone. It bounced to sophomore Hannah Koniar on the right boards. She passed it to Unsworth at the center point. Unsworth fired a bullet past Brookfield’s goalie Jenna Bales at 7:58.

USM made it 2-0 with just 56 seconds left in the first period. Breaking out of the USM zone, Revolinski chipped the puck up the right boards to Unsworth who skated it into center ice and winged a pass to Andersen speeding down the left boards. Andersen zoomed past the Brookfield defense and went in on a breakaway. Bales stopped her shot. The puck rebounded to Revolinski in the slot. She fired it and Andersen steered it into the net.

Sisk, Kobylinski and McBride soon helped the Wildcats widen their lead. At 4:30 of the second period, Kobylinski knocked the puck down the boards to Sisk who moved it along to McBride in the corner. McBride skated to the net and took a close-in shot. The puck rebounded off Bales, hit a defender’s skate, and bounced back to McBride who knocked it in.

On the ensuing face-off, center Rachel Lowe drew the puck back to Kobylinski. She forwarded it to Sisk. Sisk in turn passed it to McBride who was racing like a thoroughbred in a derby into the Brookfield zone. McBride went in on a breakaway, deked Bales, and fired the puck over the falling goalie at 4:42.

USM tallied another goal less than two minutes later. Sisk got the puck along the boards in the Brookfield zone and sent it to Unsworth in the corner. Unsworth moved around a defender and skated toward the net. She forced Bales to drop, then as cool as Lake Superior in winter, she moved past and slid the puck inside the far post to give the Wildcats a 5-0 lead at 6:39.

The Wildcats scored five more goals in the third period. The first of these came just 50 seconds into the period. On a breakout, Kobylinski sent the puck to Unsworth in center ice. Unsworth spotted Andersen heading down the left boards like a race car and lined a pass out in front of her. Andersen took it at full throttle and went in on another breakaway. She fired and scored.

The Wildcats scored again at 8:07 of the third period. Revolinski passed the puck to Andersen who was once again racing along the left boards. Unsworth joined in the race, creating a two-on-one. Nearing the low circle, Andersen crossed the puck to Unsworth who one-timed a shot past Bales to make it 7-0.

Less than a minute later, Revolinski scored USM’s eighth goal. Andersen had the puck in the Brookfield zone and passed it to Unsworth. Unsworth sent it to Revolinski in the slot. Revolinski found an open slot behind the beleaguered Bales and put the puck there at 8:45.

USM used some good passing to get their next goal. McBride got the puck behind the Brookfield net and skated around it. As she cleared the right post, McBride saw Sisk in the high slot and passed the puck to her. Sisk shot-passed it to Lowe off the left post, and, like a traffic cop, Lowe directed it into the net at 13:53.

USM made it 10-0 at 15:28. Unsworth got the puck in the Brookfield corner and passed it across the low slot to fellow freshman Katie Gebhardt perched like a watchful hawk on the far post. Gebhardt scored her first varsity goal by immediately pouncing on the puck and pushing it in.

USM is now 2-1-1 and 1-0 in the conference. The Wildcats play Arrowhead in a conference game on Saturday, December 7th at 5:00 p.m. at the Mullet Center at Arrowhead High School in Hartland.
