The Antigo Red Robins built up a 3-0 lead, and then held off a SPASH Panther comeback attempt to claim a 6-3 victory in the Wisconsin Prep Hockey Game of the Week on Tuesday night at the Langlade County Ice Arena.
Elijah Wickersheim got the Robins on the board 10:10 into the first period with a shot from the left circle that beat Panther goalie Nathan Siclovan. Just a minute later, Joe Kubacki poked in a goal off a scramble in front of Siclovan to put Antigo up 2 goals, which held up through the end of the period.
Siclovan stopped 11 shots in the first period, while Robin netminder Ryan Schmidt made 9 saves.
Antigo defenseman Jackson Charlesworth made it 3-0 Robins with a shot from the blue line on a power play that made its way through traffic. But SPASH would answer with two power play goals of their own in the second period. Nick Larson and Jacob Dufresne each knocked in rebounds with the man advantage to draw the Panthers within one.
“We handled adversity well,” said first-year Antigo coach Matt Borneman, “overcoming our best efforts to shoot ourselves in the foot by taking bad penalties.”
Schmidt stopped 12 shots in the second period, while Siclovan made 9 saves.
Alex Nagel gave Antigo a two-goal lead again early in the third period, taking a nice feed from Wickersheim behind the net. It didn't last long as Jacob Jaworski sniped another power play goal on Schmidt to make it 4-3.
“We saw the net well tonight, and got big goals when we needed them,” said Borneman. “Our goalie made some big-time saves when we broke down in coverage. And we got good play from deep on our bench, which allowed us to stay fresh and maintain pressure.”
Brian Bartletti gave Antigo their two-goal lead back at 10:36, and Joe Kubacki added an empty net goal to finish off the scoring.
Siclovan had 4 saves in the third period for a game total of 24. Schmidt made 6 saves in the third, for a game total of 27.
