Warriors ride two first period goals to victory

The Wausau West Warriors caught the host Eau Claire Memorial Old Abes flat-footed at the start of the second game of the Red Flint Meltdown tournament. Just two and a half minutes into the game Kevin Conley fed the puck from the corner to Zach Peterson in front of the net. Peterson did everything but put the puck in the goal, so Conley tapped in an easy rebound. Six minutes later, Conley and Peterson did some nifty passing and got a shot on net. The rebound fluttered up in the air where Justin Anderson grabbed it, dropped it to his stick, and deposited it in the back of the net for a 2-0 West lead.

Wausau out-shot Eau Claire 15 to 5 in the first period, but the Old Abes adjusted and picked up their game to match the speed and intensity of the visiting Warriors. The second period went by with no scoring, but plenty of chances. West goalie Sam Wiegert robbed Jacob Bresser twice when Bresser got past the West defense and in all alone. At the other end of the ice, Nick Schreiter stoned Conley at the end of a 2 on 1 that left Conley alone in front with the puck.

The Old Abes got on the board seven minutes into the third period when Bresser deflected a chest-high point shot past Wiegert to make it 2-1. But West hing on to the win and will face Notre Dame Academy on Saturday for the tournament championship.
