Bubla stops 55 in losing effort

In continuing with their theme of 'put a lot of shots on net,' the top-ranked Central Wisconsin Storm did just that Tuesday evening as they threw 61 shots on goal on their way to a 6-0 win over the Point-Rapids Red Panthers at KB Willett Arena.

In their first three games, the Storm have averaged over 52 shots per game while outscoring their opponents by a margin of 20-1 in racking up a 3-0 record to start the 2013-14 season.

The first 13 minutes of the opening period was scoreless, mostly due to the stellar netminding of Red Panther goalie Emily Bubla. The junior stopped 15 shots in the period before giving up a score.

With just over three minutes left in the period, Savannah Felch banged home a rebound, with an assist to Kelly Knetter, past Bubla to make it 1-0.

Just over a minute later, Arielle Riedel grabbed the puck behind the net and stuffed a wrap-around between the post and Bubla's right pad to increase the lead to 2-0. Ashley Zacho and Elizabeth Bauer earned assists on the play.

That's how the period ended, with the Storm holding a 21-1 shot edge.

Point-Rapids (0-1) stepped up its play in the second, holding the Storm to 13 shots before allowing a last minute goal. With just seconds remaining on the clock while on the PK, the Storm forward won the race to a puck deep in its offensive zone. She flipped it on net, but the puck bounced off the side of the net onto the stick of Maggie Plaza, who buried it past the Red Panther netminder just before the horn sounded to end the period.

Shots in the period were 14-4 in favor of the guests.

Isabelle Uhl-Chmiel scored early in the third when her shot from the slot bounced off a defender's stick into the net to make it 4-0.

Late in the period, the Storm scored twice in a span of just over three minutes to account for the final tally. Megan Marlowe moved from the right circle to the slot before firing a shot into the net, with Knetter earning her second assist. With just 16 seconds left and on the power play, Felch walked in from the low left side to beat Bubla for the final score. Marissa Matushak and Alex Guenther tallied helpers on the play.

While action was fairly quiet on her end, goalie Lisa Fowle notched her second shutout of the season while making 10 saves.

Bubla ended with 55 stops on her end of the ice.
