Young talent ensures a season opener win

As they shook the dust off in their season opener yesterday against Simley, the Hudson Raiders proved that the loss of their three leading goal scorers wouldn’t keep them from finding success. Fueled by an honorable mention Top 10 nod and a tough loss to Superior in last year’s Sectional Final, Carter Schuett found the net twice for the only two goals of the game.

Coach Brooks Lockwood commented, “More than losing our top goal scorers, we lost a lot of leadership. We have a young team from top to bottom, and we’re going to need some of the younger guys to step up into those leadership roles.”

Only a sophomore, Schuett looks to be one of the players sliding into those leadership roles.

Several penalties in the beginning minutes of the first period seemed to rattle both teams, but after settling back into the groove of the season, Wyatt Dove, a junior and captain, found Schuett who slid the puck past Ryan Alsterlund from the slot for Hudson’s first goal of the season.

The time of the goal read 12:42 and gave them a 1-0 lead.

Another flurry of penalties, Simley’s Nick Battis for slashing and Ken McLean for boarding as well as Hudson’s AJ Romanoski for elbowing, all occurred within the last three minutes of the period.

Hudson came back into the second period with a little over four minutes before McLean’s penalty expired. Several opportunities presented themselves to the fast-moving powerplay unit, which included Romanoski and Parker Shefveland, but Simley’s goaltending remained strong leaving them scoreless for the period.

Ariez Sime found himself making up for the two minutes he served in the penalty box for cross-checking by tallying several shots on net. Alsterlund stopped a nice breakaway shot by Sime who was looking to advance Hudson’s lead.

The third period began with some added intensity, Simley controlling the play for the majority of the opening minutes.

Schuett wouldn’t back down, and the dynamic duo struck again. This time, Schuett went bar down from the right face-off dot at 4:48 in the period. Dove and Iver Baribeau earned assists on the play.

The Raiders were backed by solid goaltending in Mac Alboreo who faced 12 shots and earned himself a shutout. Hudson tallied a total of 21 shots in the 2-0 win.
