The move came after the district was required by federal guidelines to provide equal sports opportunity for both sexes. Earlier this year, the board approved adding a boys swim team to its 2014-15 winter sports line-up. But there's still questions whether a girls hockey team can attract enough athletes, with hefty cost and time commitments.
Two board members, Bill Wipperfurth and Mark Seidler, voted against the plan, citing those concerns.
"This is a major, major undertaking," Wipperfurth said at the June 10 school board meeting.
