RE: Wausau East Boy’s Hockey

Wausau East High School announces the resignation of Dan Bauer as Head Boys Hockey Coach. Coach Bauer has been in the position for the past 11 seasons. Mr. Bauer will continue to teach in the district.

Coach Bauer leaves after leading the team to many very successful seasons. Bauer’s teams set school records for most wins with 16 in 2009-10 and again in 2010-11 when they finished with 20 wins. Over the last 4 seasons, the teams 55 game win total was the most in school history over any four year period. He finishes his career at East with more wins, 111, than any other coach in East history. In 2006 Bauer’s Lumberjacks made it to the section final only to lose to SPASH 5-3. Bauer was named Bob Johnson Memorial Coach of the Year in 2006. Most recently, Coach Bauer’s current Lumberjacks received the prestigious honor of being named the State Academic Champion by the Wisconsin High School Hockey Association for having the highest team grade point average in the state. It was the second time that his teams have received the honor. They also won the honor in 2006.

Bauer, who spent 11 years as head coach at Spooner before accepting the East job has a career record of 211-244-12.

Athletic Director Greg Harvey commented on Bauer’s tenure at Wausau East.

“Coach Bauer has always been committed to the development of the total student-athlete. He placed high expectations on his players both on the ice as well as in the classroom. His leadership in our hockey program will be sorely missed. I know that this was a very difficult decision for Dan and that leaving East Hockey was not an easy thing for him to do. He is a highly respected teacher and coach, and we are very appreciative and thankful for all he has done for Wausau East Lumberjack Hockey over the last 11 years.”

Bauer, who has two twin daughters who will be sophomores next year, cited personal reasons for his departure. “I really want to be able to watch them (my daughters) play high school hockey and being a boy’s head coach won’t allow for that to happen,” said Bauer. “For thirty some years I have made many decisions based on what was best for my hockey program, today I make a decision that is best for my family. It is the right decision, but that doesn’t make it any easier. I will leave the East program not accomplishing what I came to do, but knowing I gave the job everything I had. Sometimes that just has to be enough.”

“I have been very fortunate to have dedicated players who love the game at both Spooner and East. I am thankful for the opportunity to lead two programs and proud of what they both accomplished. I never scored a goal, made a save or aced a bio exam, the players made it all happen.”

“I will leave behind an absolutely great core of parents at East. They understand that high school athletics goes way beyond wins and loses. In a time of out-of-control parents, these people truly get it. I will be forever indebted to them for their tremendous support of our program.”

The search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
