Two goal lead early ends up being a two goal loss

Sunday's third place game at the Minnesota NIT saw Team Wisconsin get out to a 3-1 lead after one period against Team Minnesota's U18 team.

But it's a three period game.

Team Minnesota roared back to put up four straight goals and grab a 5-3 victory at Plymouth Ice Center.

Wisconsin started great and scored on its first shift of the game when Jake Miller tipped a shot by Thomas Aiken into the net for the 1-0 lead 17 seconds in.

Minnesota U18 came right back with the first power play of the game and scored not even two minutes after the TW tally for an even game. Spencer Naas of Mn U18 broke for the net and got it past TW goalie Sam Nelson.

Wisconsin got the lead back with about eight minutes gone when Jake Miller caught Mn U18 napping and scored on a breakaway for the 2-1 lead.

The end of TW's scoring came with about seven minutes left in the first on a 2 on 1 goal that was well executed by Michael Wilson with Jake Bresser and Jake Miller assisting.

Then Mn U18 showed its skill.

Steve Spinner was able on the break to beat Nelson below the crossbar to cut the lead to 3-2, and then Minnesota tied it on a power play goal by Naas when he was able to find the puck after it snuck behind Nelson and tapped it in.

The comeback was completed when TW was on the power play and goalie Nelson came out to play a loose puck. He looked like he didn't get all of it while clearing it away and was sprawling when Tyler Sheehy scored in a wide open net making it 4-2 at second intermission.

TW couldn't avoid taking another penalty and on a breakaway the referee awarded a penalty shot to Mn U18. Westin Michaud got off a shot and sent the puck past Nelson for the 5-3 lead.

Wisconsin did have a power play in the period by Mn U18 was able to get it killed off and slammed the door on any TW rally.

Shots ended 35-34 Mn U18 and TW, while showing signs of being ready to compete at times in the tournament, could not get consistent play in its last two games. They ended the 2013 Minnesota NIT with a 1-3 record.
