Ingbretson scores hattie in state title final

Meredith Ingbretson was injured early in the season, and it seemed like her senior year might be in jeopardy. The Hayward/Spooner (HASP) forward worked her way back into the line-up, scoring 16 points in her last 11 regular season games.

Today, Ingbretson bettered that when she notched three goals to help lead HASP past Onalaska 5-2 in Saturday's final at the Alliant Energy Center.

The senior forward opened the scoring late in the first when she gathered in a rebound and tucked it past Onalaska goalie Jeanalyn Schindler at the 15:39 mark of the first, with an assist to Cheyenne Turnbull.

Onalaska held a 9-8 shot edge in the first.

The second period kept the scoreboard operator busy, as a total of five goals were scored in 17 minutes.

Ingbretson scored her second goal just over two minutes in while on the power play with her rebound goal. Emma Dieckman and Leandra Aldoff earned helpers on the score.

Two minutes later, Holly Turnbull ripped a shot from the high slot that ended in the upper right corner of the net for a 3-0 lead. Dieckman and Annika Neerdaels were given assists on the play.

Ingbretson scored her third on a play that was all her--she gathered up a loose puck in the NZ and zoomed past a couple changing Onalaska players. She curled in on the goalie and took a shot which was stopped. The rebound was grabbed by a Hilltopper player in the slot, but as she was attempting to clear the puck, Ingbretson stole it and zipped a shot past the Onalaska netminder to make it 4-0 at the 10:52 mark for a short-handed goal.

One minute later, Theresa Knutson cut the lead to 4-1 when she grabbed a long rebound and put it into the net as she was being dragged down by a Hurricane defender at 11:56, with an assist to Jamie Weilandt.

It appeared the period would end that way, but Knutson once again worked

her magic as she managed to find the puck in a flurry of bodies and found the back of the net at 16:43. Weilandt and Jacyn Reeves earned helpers on the play.

Shots in the period were 10-4 in favor of Hayward/Spooner.

Hayward scored the final goal of the game when Neerdaels popped in a rebound at 4:58. Turnbull and Aly Tremblay were given assists on the play.

Three minutes later, Baylee Darling's short-handed breakaway rush was thwarted by the right leg pad of HASP goalie Sarah Miley.

Onalaska had a power play chance in the middle of the period but could not convert.

The Hilltoppers had 34 seconds of 6-on-4 as they pulled the netminder for an extra attacker but were unable to score as the clock ran down to 0:00.

Onalaska held a 10-6 shot edge in the period.

Miley stopped 21 saves for Hayward, while Schindler made 14 saves for Onalaska.

The Hurricanes earned the state championship in their first finals appearance, while Onalaska fell to 0-4 in championship games.
