Verona forward outpolls talented field

Verona's Zach Jones was chosen as the 2013 American Family Insurance / WHCA Player of the Year, it was announced Wednesday evening at a packed house at the Sheraton Madison Hotel.

"It feels really good actually," said Jones with a huge grin on his face. "To represent my school, the community, my team--it's pretty cool."

Jones was honored at the banquet that also fetes the boys' state qualifying teams, along with the eight POTY finalists.

The eight finalists were:

  • Thomas Aiken, Whitefish Bay
  • Quinn Disrud, KMMO
  • Thomas Fazio, Homestead
  • Griff Jeszka, Marquette
  • Zach Jones, Verona
  • Joshua Lemke, Chequamegon/Phillips
  • Steven Phillips, Notre Dame
  • Daniel Tripicchio, Hudson

The field of seniors began with 26 nominees, and that was whittled down to the final field of eight by coaches' votes.
