Waukesha moves on to Sectional Final

Delafield - It's tough to beat a 6-foot-5, 205-pound goalie - especially one surrounded by an invisible shield.

"Every once in a while, Jake will make a save we can't believe and one of the coaches will make a joke like, 'Well, he must have activated his force field,' " Waukesha hockey coach Raja Aylsworth said Tuesday after junior goalie Jake Kupsky led the Wings to a 1-0 overtime victory over Milwaukee Marquette in sectional semifinal game at Nagawaukee Ice Arena.

Kupsky, and Waukesha's unshakable penalty-killing unit, kept the score even until senior Nick Rader's goal with 2 minutes 7 seconds remaining in overtime.

Rader took a shot from the point. The puck hit either Waukesha's Dominik Florian or a Marquette defenseman (or both), popped into the air and fell over the shoulder of Hilltoppers goalie Mike Roznik and into the net.

"I just saw it hit a couple guys in front, flip up and go over (Roznik)," Rader said.

The victory sends Waukesha (19-6-1) into the sectional title game against Whitefish Bay at 6 p.m. Saturday at Nagawaukee. The Storm edged top-seeded Kettle Moraine, 3-2, in overtime.

Marquette (18-7-1) missed out on a third consecutive state tournament appearance.

The Wings had beaten the Hilltoppers, 9-4, on Dec. 7, but Roznik was injured and did not play. The tenor of the game was much different this time, with both netminders appearing invincible.

That was exactly what Kupsky needed to be when Waukesha killed off a 5-minute penalty in the second period and a 2-minute penalty with 3:41 remaining in regulation. Kupsky faced 45 shots, many with his team down a man.

"We certainly would like to have scored there, but we had plenty of other chances," Marquette coach Troy Sippl said.

"I had faith in everybody's heart and legs," Kupsky said of the penalty-killing units that included senior Doug Devoe and juniors Zed Dietrich and Alex Runge. "That's why we run stairs every practice."

It appeared as if all those stairs might be for naught if the Wings couldn't find a way to solve Roznik, who stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced.

"Both teams just played their hearts out," Aylsworth said. "You knew it was going to end like that - a bounce of the puck, one way or another."
