Spartans down new Richmods 4-1

Superior and New Richmond slugged it out for the right to advance to the section 1 final in Menomonie Friday night with the Spartans prevailing by a score of 4-1.

The Tigers were throwing bodies around from the opening whistle and the officials were letting the boys play. The teams traded scoring chances for a third of the period before Superior broke through with a goal from the right side of the Tiger net on a put back by Daniel Burger. Aaron Chwialkowski stopped the initial shot but didn't control the rebound after a flurry in the slot. Assisting were Mitch Anderson and Aaron Wakefield-Zubiate. The Tigers successfully killed the only penalty in the period a check from behind on Austin Zywiec as he caught a Spartan skater trying to enter the zone at the blue line. The period ended with Superior holding a 1-0 lead. Saves in the period were 8 for the Tigers and 6 for the Spartans.

Superior took a bench minor for too many men on the ice at 2:35 of the 2nd and the Tigers took advantage 28 seconds later when Tyler Lagerstrom banged home a rebound from the left side beating Paxton Paine at 3:03. Assists went to Josh Manske and Michael Bodsberg. With Kaleb Kier in the box for a hook at 6:29 Superior got the game winner from Trent Olson on a low shot through traffic from the top of the left circle. That power play goal came at 8:25 with a helper to Grant Hanson. That goal sparked Superior as they carried the play for the remainder of the period missing several chances on bouncing pucks. Aaron Miller was able to put back his own rebound at 13:05 to extend the lead to 3-1. He was assisted by Tyler Nystrom and Olson. Saves in the period were 14 for New Richmond and 4 for Superior.

The Tigers came out pressing in the third down by a 2 goal deficit and got some momentum on back to back Spartan penalties but were unable to cash in. Miller put the nail in the coffin at 16:43 when he put back a rebound of a Nystrom shot from the slot making the score 4-1. Superior will face the Hudson Raiders a 3-0 winner over Somerset with a trip to Madison on the line this Friday at 7:00 pm in Menomonie.
