Coombs gets first career hat trick in win over Tomahawk

In her 36 previous high school varsity games, Red Panthers junior Kiana Coombs scored a grand total of two goals.

Last night against Tomahawk, the scrappy forward put three pucks in the net, leading her team to an 8-1 victory at the KB Willett Arena in Stevens Point in Great Northern Conference action.

The Red Panthers scored just 1:29 into the contest on a nice coast-to-coast goal by Rachel Metz. The remainder of the period was dominated by the netminders, as Hatchets goalie Chelsea Garinger stopped ten pucks, while Red Panthers goalie Emily Bubla made six saves.

In the middle period, Katrina Hassig scored early, followed two minutes later by Coombs' power play goal.

Sarah Peplinski scored at the 10:00 mark, with an assist from Molly Kuckkahn, and then Coombs added another power play score with just under two minutes left. Hannah Beilke got the assist to make the score 5-0, which is how the period ended.

Shots were 15-9 in favor of the home team.

Coombs completed her hat trick just eight seconds into the final period, sending the game into run time. Kuckkahn earned her second assist.

Rachel McNamara scored at the 5:32 mark as she grabbed a loose puck at center ice and skated down below the right circle before firing a shot that beat the Tomahawk netminder to increase the lead to 7-0.

Bubla lost her shutout when Leah Foster scored on a rebound at 11:51. Erika Vallier got the helper.

Metz closed the scoring with 3:19 left, with assists to Hailey Ehr and Hassig. Shots were 12-2 in favor of Point-Rapids.

Bubla ended with 16 saves in earning the win, while Garinger stopped 30 shots for Tomahawk.

The Red Panthers (10-11-2, 9-4-1 GNC) travel to Rhinelander to face the Northern Edge Thursday in first-round tournament play, while Tomahawk (4-17-1, 1-11-1 GNC) has the unenviable task of taking on defending state champ Central Wisconsin Storm in Mosinee the same day.
