Strong OLSM second period leads to Warriors defeat

Visiting Orchard Lake St. Marys came to the Showdown in Titletown to try to prove that Michigan high school hockey is a quality product.

OLSM proved that Friday night in preliminary action, when they dropped an overtime heartbreaker to Eau Claire Memorial 3-2.

Saturday, they brought their 'A' game as they scored three times in the middle period to edge Wausau West 4-2 in afternoon Showdown action.

West scored early in the first, when Kevin Conley scored an unassisted goal just 1:14 in.

Just over two minutes later, with the teams playing 4-on-4, Sean Harrington got a nice, crisp cross-ice pass from Michael Muller, took a quarter-second to get it right on the tape, and buried it past West goalie Sam Wiegert, who was playing the puck on the other side of the net.

The last five minutes of the period was a special teams extravaganza, but neither team could score and made the skate to the locker rooms tied at one. West held a slight 8-7 shot edge.

West took the lead just over two minutes into the second when Adam Parsells scored on the power play with an assist to Conley.

The rest of the period was all Orchard Lake.

Cooper Anstett was given credit for the a goal to tie the contest when his shot from the right dot appeared to be re-directed past Wiegert at 5:39, with helpers to Dakota Ulmer and Shane Kelly.

Two minutes later, Eric Williams scored with an assist from Damian Tenuta to give OLSM a 3-2 lead at the 7:30 mark.

With just over five minutes left, Cooper Marody scored to make it 4-2, with a helper to Miller Rubin.

Shots were 8-7, in favor of OLSM.

The final period was quiet on the scoresheet, as there were no scores or penalties.

The biggest excitement in the final minutes of play were after Wiegert came off for an extra attacker and then five seconds later West scored a goal, only to be waved off for the net being off its moorings.

OLSM held a 9-7 shot edge.

For the winners, Will Ulrich stopped 20 of 22 shots, while Wiegert steered aside 20 of 24 for West.
