Bubla stops 28 shots for Point-Rapids

Exactly three weeks ago, the Badger Thunder and Point-Rapids Red Panthers played in the seventh-place game in Culvers' Cup action at the Madison Ice Arena.

The result?

A 6-0 victory for the Thunder, who thoroughly dominated the contest from start to finish.

Turn the calendar ahead twenty-one days, and the same two teams lined up on a blustery, chilly evening at Baraboo's Pierce Park Pavilion. This time, however, the outcome was much more in line with expectations on both sides as the teams battled for 59 minutes and the final tally showed one apiece.

'This (score) is more like what I thought would happen,' noted Thunder coach Jim Cabaj after the game. 'Not that 6-0 score.'

The game was also designated as the home crew's senior night, as they honored Kayla Mundt, Leigh Stawinoga, Kayla D'Asto, Carley Bill, Spencer Natzke, and Allison Blada during the first intermission.

This contest went 34 minutes without any scoring, as sophomore goalies Jamie Dutton (Thunder) and Emily Bubla (Red Panthers) turned aside 15 shots each as shown on the scoresheet after two periods.

The first goal of the game was of the fluky variety.

Just 13 seconds into the final period of regulation, the Thunder's Rachel Pawlak threw the puck from the right circle towards the net. Bubla appeared to raise her stick to let the puck sail harmlessly into the opposite corner, but the biscuit bounced off the ice, nicked the right leg pad and slid into the goal behind her. Carley Bill was given an assist on the score.

Midway through the period the guests tied the score on a hustle goal by the team's top two scorers. Just as a Thunder penalty had expired, Sarah Peplinski motored down the right side, tucked her shoulder and cut behind the net. She lost her edge but tossed the puck out front to a crashing Rachel Metz, who was more than happy to bury it past Dutton at 7:56 to knot the contest at one.

Shots were 8-7 in favor of the hosts in the period.

The overtime period spotlighted excellent goalie play, as Dutton was perfect on the south end of the rink in making three stops. Bubla made two stellar glove saves on her end as time wound down and ended with six saves in the period.

Dutton finished with 24 saves for the Thunder, and Bubla tallied 28 on her end of the ice for Point-Rapids.

The Thunder (3-11-2) will face Beaver Dam/Randolph next Friday, while the Red Panthers (7-9-1) host the Northern Edge Monday night in Great Northern Conference play.
