Milanowski scores twice and Metz adds four points in win

Amanda Milanowski scored twice and Rachel Metz scored a goal and added three helpers as the Point-Rapids Red Panthers kicked their game into gear in the second period to defeat host Tomahawk 9-2 on a foggy Friday evening at SARA Park Ice Arena.

When it looked like the two teams were going to end the first 17 minutes in a scoreless battle, each team banged home goals in the final 60 seconds of play. Katrina Hassig knocked in a rebound for a power play goal with 48 seconds left to play to give the visitors the lead.

A short time later, the Hatchets' Nicole Nerva blasted a shot from the high slot that bounced high off the blocker of Red Panthers goalie Emily Bubla and landed behind her to knot the contest at one with 34 seconds left. The guests held a 10-3 shot edge in the stanza.

Point-Rapids scored three times in a span of four minutes early in the second to take a lead that they would not surrender.

Metz scored a power play goal at 13:04 to make it 2-1 before Hailey Ehr and Rachel Nolan scored 50 seconds apart to give the Red Panthers a comfortable 4-1 lead.

Tomahawk had the misfortune of taking two penalties and playing two skaters down in the middle of the period, but got the last laugh when they scored a shortie just after the first penalty expired.

Erika Vallier picked off a lazy point-to-point pass in the neutral zone and raced toward the Red Panthers goal before ripping a shot from the slot that Bubla made the initial save on but couldn't corral and watched as Vallier grabbed the rebound and punched it in to make it 4-2.

Nicole Krueger and Sarah Peplinski scored in the last 1:20 of the period and the teams skated off with Point-Rapids holding a 6-2 lead. Shots were 22-5 in the period in favor of the guests.

Taylor Grimm scored in the middle of the final stanza on a rebound and Milanowski scored twice in less than two minutes to account for the 9-2 final. Shots were 8-2 in favor of Point-Rapids.

Peplinski also added two assists for Point-Rapids.

Bubla stopped six pucks in two periods and Taylor Stuettgen added two more in the final 17 minutes for the Red Panthers. Chelsea Garinger made some nice stops on the other end and finished with 31 saves.

The Red Panthers improve to 6-9 (5-2 Great Northern) and travel to Waupaca next Monday. Tomahawk (4-9, 1-5 GNC) has a quick turnaround as they host Fox Cities tomorrow evening.
