Carignan's Effort Not Enough For Upset Bid

Two old Badger Conference foes got together on Tuesday night in Verona as the Big Eight leading Wildcats hosted the Badger Conference Oregon Panthers. The Wildcats came in as the number 3 rated team in the state with a potent offense and were stymied time after time in the first period by Oregon netminder Kyle Carnigan. Verona finally broke thru with under a minute left in the period when Brogan Baker was able to get off a sharp angle shot from near the left circle past Carnigan for the 1-0 Verona lead after 1 period.

After being outshot 13-5 in the first, the Panthers were able to keep the game at a 1-0 thru two periods after being outshot 13-5 again.

The third period saw Verona finally break thru for insurance under a minute into the third period. Zak Keryluk circled behind the net with the puck and found a wide open Zach Jones mid slot who one timed it into the net for a 2-0 lead. Verona finished the scoring with Brogan Baker getting a stick on a puck to deflect into the net for a 3-0 final score. Harry Seid assisted on both Baker goals.

Verona improved to 13-1 overall, including 13 straight since losing opening day. Oregon fell to 4-6-2. Kyle Carnigan finished with 36 saves while Jon Fiala made 13 saves for Verona. The Wildcats travel to Arrowhead Friday, while Oregon is back to action Friday against Waukesha.
