Pines scores five times in decisive final stanza

There might have been many people in The Dome in Eagle River that thought the visiting Point-Rapids Red Panthers had the game wrapped up after 34 minutes, leading host Northland Pines 3-0.

There were at least 20 people that thought otherwise. And they were the ones wearing the white, red, and blue in the home locker room.

Skating like ladies possessed, the Eagles scored three times in the first five minutes of the third period to tie the game and went on to win 5-4 in a wild and wooly Great Northern Conference game Monday evening.

The scoreless first period had both goalies perfect, as Pines' Jena Paez stopped five shots and Red Panthers goalie Emily Bubla had eight saves.

The guests worked hard and scored three times in a span of less than 4 1/2 minutes early in the second to stun the home crowd and fire up the visiting throng of 20 perched in the upper seats of the Dome's north end.

First, Rachel Metz got the guests on the board when she skated the puck from behind the net, curled around the left dot and fired a shot that beat Paez between her blocker and the left post at 3:03.

Just over a minute later, Metz was once again involved. Winning the faceoff, she sent the puck back toward defenseman Hannah Beilke, who wristed the puck into the net from the top of the left circle for a 2-0 lead at the 4:11 mark.

Hailey Ehr made it 3-0 when she grabbed a turnover deep in the Eagles defensive zone and slipped the puck past the netminder at 7:27. All three goals were of the unassisted variety.

Shots in the period were 12-4 in favor of the home team.

That left one period to play, with Point-Rapids leading 3-0.

Not sure what was said in the home locker room, but the Eagles came out forechecking like demons and the puck seemingly never left the Red Panthers defensive zone in the first five minutes, except for the opening faceoff and three others, all after Pines' scores.

Claire Decker put a 'one' on the board for Pines just 43 seconds into the period when her shot from the top of the right circle through traffic beat the Rapids keeper. Jessica Roach and Paige Healy earned helpers on the play.

Just over three minutes later, defenseman Winter Nielsen scored from the top of the left circle at 3:51 to cut the lead to 3-2. Kali Ebert earned an assist on the score.

About one minute later, Sydney Moustakis banged home a rebound to tie the game much to the delight of the home crowd, which included part of the Northland Pines band and a rather vociferous student section. Ebert and Cali Sanborn were credited with assists.

When it looked like all was lost for the Red Panthers, Metz once again put her mark on the contest, scoring on a rebound after following her initial shot. The unassisted tally from the low right side sparked the visiting crowd and made it 4-3 in favor of the guests.

There was plenty of back and forth action for the next nine minutes, but neither team could convert and it looked like this one was headed for overtime.

But Moustakis put that idea to bed, scoring on a rebound from the left side to give the hosts a 5-4 lead with 12 seconds left.

Coach Rachael Graves pulled her netminder before the faceoff, but it was too little, too late as the Eagles shocked the Red Panthers with the comeback and the 5-4 win. Pines held a huge 17-4 shot edge in the period.

Paez stopped nine pucks for Pines, while Bubla was slightly busier on the other end, making 32 saves for Point-Rapids.

Pines (8-6-1, 6-0-1 GNC) will host the Northern Edge Friday, while Point-Rapids (5-9, 4-2) once again travels north as they visit Tomahawk on Friday.
