Walsh spectacular in 45 save effort in loss

The Point-Rapids Red Panthers got goals from Sarah Peplinski, Nicole Krueger, and Rachel Metz as they skated past Medford 3-0 Friday night at Ice Hawks Arena in Great Northern Conference play.

From the start, the Red Panthers controlled play against a Medford team decimated by injuries and illness. Senior goalie Tori Walsh single-handedly kept the Raiders in the game in the first 17 minutes of play, turning aside a baker's dozen worth of shots in the period.

The first period ended scoreless, with the hosts winning the shot battle, 13-1.

Peplinski finally got the Red Panthers on the board when she scored from the top of the left circle at the 4:58 mark to make it 1-0 in favor of the home team.

Six minutes later, Krueger scored her first varsity goal when she snagged a loose puck near the right dot and fired it past the Medford netminder to give the Red Panthers a two-goal lead.

Toward the end of the period, the Red Panthers found some good fortune while on a power play.

With the penalty time winding down and the Medford player anxious to get out of the sin bin, defenseman Rachel McNamara  skated from her right point position toward the middle of the ice and fired a shot that Metz re-directed from her spot in the slot to make it a three-goal lead with 1:42 left in the period.

Point-Rapids held a massive 25-3 shot edge in the decisive period.

Taylor Stuettgen came in to relieve Point-Rapids goalie Emily Bubla to start the final period.

The Red Panthers outshot the visitors by a margin of 10-1 in the scoreless period.

Bubla (4) and Stuettgen (1) combined for five saves, while a very busy Walsh stopped 45 pucks at her end in the contest.

The Red Panthers (5-8, 4-1 GNC) travel to Eagle River to take on GNC co-leader Northland Pines on Monday while Medford (1-7-1, 0-4-1 GNC) will host the Northern Edge the same evening.
