Austin Freeman broke out of an early-season scoring slump at the perfect time, and the Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago/Oconomowoc boys hockey team won a 4-3 battle in overtime against Kenosha on Friday, the first of solid back-to-back games on the ice.

Despite three Freeman assists, the team fell to Bay Port the next day, 4-3, but coach John Brymer considered the game a good one.

"Win lose or draw, you'd like to play 24 of those games for our regular season," Brymer said. "We would score and they'd pretty much answer within the next minute or two. One of our defensemen stepped in and overplayed the puck carrier, not watching the weakside winger, and he snuck in and scored a goal to make it 3-2."

Bay Port added an empty netter before the Lasers scrambled for a late goal, when Freeman found Allen Moutvic.

Greg Simandl and Robbie Dombrowski also added goals in the loss, and Jonathan Carfagna and Jim Rice added assists.

"It was good to see Austin step up; he'd been pressing," Brymer said. "All year, he hadn't scored, and then he got the overtime winner Friday night, and that was good for his confidence and took some pressure off him. Now you're seeing him produce a little bit more."

It was the third power play goal of the night.
